McCann Family 1860's Uphall
« on: Tuesday 21 October 08 21:23 BST (UK) »
Hi There,

I wonder if anyone can help us.  For 2 years I have been researching my husbands side of the family.  Their name was McGoohan/Mcgouchan/magohan/McGooghan.  Or probably anything that sounds vaguely like it.
His great grandparents wer Patrick and Sarah McGoohan, Sarah's maiden name was Conway.  We know that they got married in Edinburgh under the name of McGowan and lived their lives out in the Cowgate area of Edinburgh.  We also know that Patrick had a sister called Mary, who married a Kelly and they also lived in the Cowgate.

We were also able to tell that Ptricks parents were John McGoohan and Bridget, ms Dunigan.  We thought that Bridget, c1800 was still in Ireland.  We have now found evidence that Bridget McGoohan was in the West Lothian area of Uphall and died at Niddry, Uphall.  We also have further evidence that she had a daughter also called Bridget, c1833.  Bridget married Edward McCann (also from Ireland) in Linlithgow in 1856 and had several children.  Bridget c1858, Margaret, c1861, Mary Angus c1863, Edward, c1870, James c1865, John 1868.
Bridget c1833 died on 11/01/1886 at Simpsons Rows, Uphall, Broxburn.

Can anyone tell me if Simpson Rows are still standingand Where they may be buried.  (THey were RC) and if anyone can connect to them.

Thank you in anticipation.

Kind regards,
Lynda

Lynda,
The area you are interested in (Uphall) is only 5 minutes from where I live. The Catholic Church is St. Nicholas. This Church does not have a burial ground of its own, all burials are in Uphall Graveyard. I had a look for the location of Simpsons Rows but so far no luck, these rows were built for the Shale Oil Industry which has gone a long time ago. so it is likely they moved on to other mining areas in nearby Lanarkshire, I know there are / were McCanns in Whiterigg and Plains.

James.
Will keep looking

Hello RC's,

Can anyone advise me where to look for a cemetrey in Uphall.  Uphall I have been advised was not opened until 1893.  I am looking for a grave in 1874  in the Uphall area.

Many thanks,

Lynda

Lynda,
There is another cemetery in Uphall, its in the part called Old Uphall and as the name implies is older than
the present burial ground. But this is a Non Catholic church and yard, there would be no Catholic burials there.

I would think that early Catholic burials would be in Bathgate, 6 or 7 miles away. Here is the History of Bathgate Catholic Church which will give you a picture of the times. I believe Bathgate Priests served the outlying areas.

Here is a link to Broxburn Catholic Church, which looked after the affairs of Uphall, but the church here has no burial ground.

Hi Mosstrooper,

Thank you for this information.  It has made me think of the marriage cert in 1856, which was in Linlithgow.  When I spoke with the lady at West Lothian Cemetries yesterday, she suggested that there would have been no difference as to whether the person was RC or Church of Scotland and that all would have been buried together, but I am not sure about this.  I will have a wee look at the information you have sent me.

Many thanks for your help.

Kind regards,
Lynda
