I see that the dreaded Rootsweb
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=Search&includedb=&lang=en&ti=&surname=Stuart&stype=Exact&given=Stonehouse&bplace=&byear=&brange=0&dplace=&dyear=&drange=0&mplace=&myear=&mrange=0&father=&mother=&spouse=&skipdb=&period=All&submit.x=Search

has a marriage - same as indicated by Monica, there are 11 entries  (if you search for Stonehouse Stewart - you'll come up with another  entry on the site - indicates same wife but has no children)- one includes this:

"Monumental Inscription Harwich
In the memory of Stonehouse Stuart who departed this life on the 2nd December 1853 in the 98th year of his life and Elizabeth his wife who departed this life on 30th November 1843 aged 75 years"

Also, a search of Google Books brings up the following snippet:

The Smugglers' Century: The Story of Smuggling on the Essex Coast, 1730-1830‎ - Page 67
by Hervey Benham, Essex Record Office - Smuggling - 212 pages

Five years earlier Capt Smith of the Leopard, also of Harwich, gave his reason
for employing a local branch pilot, Stonehouse Stewart, at 6s a day. ..."

That's all my input I'm afraid.  Good luck with your searching.   Regards,   Steve :O)

Off to bed with a wife and a good book - or should that be a good wife and a book I think :O)  :O)........

Another hello from me  :)

Just in case you don't have this, a reference to his marriage:

Stonehouse STUART of Sunderland Durham & Elizabeth RANDFIELD O T P 8 june 1787
Witnesses Grace BEERTON? & Thos BEERTON?
film no 952944

http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/ENG-SUFFOLK-SAMFORD-DISTRICT/2006-05/1147255640

Monica  :)

Dear Monica,
I was about to order this film until I got distracted by information which said the marriage took place in London and this archive didn't seem to fit that.  Are you able to say what this archive actually is and what the names of the districts mean....would it mean that if this marriage is listed there it took place in Suffolk?

thanks for your help

I don't know is the honest answer.

The information which included the marriage details came from the RootsWeb link I posted. Reading it as it stands, it seems the lady who posted has actually looked the film she referenced and she posted the details contained therein.

Given it was posted on the ENG-SUFFOLK-SAMFORD-DISTRICT-L Archives, you would think it was relevant to the area. As you are doing, always worthwhile double checking though. What information makes you think the marriage may have taken place in London?

The information on the London marriage came to me from researchers on the Randfield side but now it appears to be rather uncertain so I shall order this film to confirm once and for all.  However, even if I find the marriage, I don't expect to find any mention of father's name for Stonehouse Stuart.  This is what I really want and need so I can go beyond him but I don't think parents' names were listed around this time on marriage records.

Even though this marriage record confirms that he's from Sunderland Co. Durham, there's also no record of his baptism that I or anyone can find so it's a bit of a no-hoper at the moment.

Still, to confirm at least the place of marriage will be good.

thanks again for everything
