I find my Welsh ancestors notoriously difficult to trace. How about you?

I would say 1715/20 Mitcheltroy, Mon. Earliest I have got to is John and Hannah Griffiths, He died 1749 and she 1780. I'm assuming she was at least 65. They had children, Michael born 1741, Thomas 1743 and Tacy born 1747.

Michael may have been unmarried and died Monmouth 1800. Tacy died in 1757 and I am descended from Thomas. Next generation, Thomas and Jane. She died 1802. They had James born 1792 and Tacy born 1795. James was my GGGrandfather 1792 - 1857.

Michael, not usual christian name, Irish connection? Tacy in 2 generations, Quaker connection?

"I've" only just scraped into the "further back than 1650" . Not my tree really, I wish!!. It's my husband's tree. One of his lines we've traced  right back to 1648 in Abergwilli, Carmarthen, "Jermiah John"

The next longest is  1690 Owen's in Oystermouth, then the  very early 1700's with his Bydder's of Oystermouth, Morgan's of Pennard. some people!!, It's enough to make you sick :P. he's lucky with these families.

Although he does have a very short line on his "Russian" immigrant to Wales "carlsen", and then other lines late 1700's, early 1800's, and his Bowen's of Skewen/Neath, thomas's etc

My tree is a  totally different matter, it's a shrub -  I haven't gone back before 1800 on any of my Welsh lot yet. I'm having a very tough time  - anyone know an  Ann Davies of Carmarthen , born around 1830 ?? lol  ;D  My welsh lines, are around  the 1830's/1840's. I've gone from Glamorgan into Carmarthen, and having a tough time finding them there, they are hiding from me . :)

I've managed to get back to a marriage in 1738 in Clyro, Radnorshire (Matthias Teague and Anne Price).

It's taken some doing as I was original looking for Bevan  (my maiden name) not any easy task, only to discover that the father of my 2xG Grandmother may not have been a Bevan at all!!

Her mother (Anne Teague) did marry a Thomas Bevan but he died before my 2xGGrandmother was born. Her mother had a further six children, all with the surname Bevan, with no father in evidence!!!

I must admit there were a few times that I cursed my welsh heritage  ::)

Bevan, Hill, Tustin, Watkins, Teague (Herefordshire, Radnorshire). Rockett, Lillycrap, Govett, Gready, Saunders (Somerset). Sussex, Smale (Devon). Oliver, Kennedy, Cummings, Wright (Co. Durham). Farish (Cumberland, Scotland). Cox (London, Middlessex, Buckinghamshire).

Christine
Same here with me with the Irish.  I am only tracing my father's side for that reason. My mother is Irish . I haven't got a clue where to start on the Irish tracing, her side. Although I know exactly where my mother was born in Ireland, and my grandparents, and G grandparents on both sides. Then have just  names further back.  I recently had a photo given to me of my G G grandparents too, taken in Belfast in the early 1900's . My mum had it stashed away. I'm quite  chuffed I have  some faces to the names on that side.

It looks complicated for the Irish side if you are  not in Ireland to search what records they  do have, or may have. So for now  I'm just concentrating on my father's side , which is more than enough to keep me busy trying to find these escape artists.
my own  little shrub :)
