William Henry Izod
« on: Friday 21 November 08 20:28 GMT (UK) »
Could anyone please look in 1860/70 census for a William H Izod with wife Jane. He was born about 1815 in New York and Jane was born about 1818 in Middlesex Uk. I do know he came to England as he is on the 1851 census but can't find him after that so maybe he went back to the USA as his parents John and Mary Ann were still living there.  He dies in 1886 in West Ham, England.

The only William Izods that appeared in search results in the A databases were all in England. I did find this entry for a William and Jane Jzod (the original really does look like Jzod, not a transcription error) as follows:

1871 census - West Kensington Hotel, Kensington, London
William H. Jzod, head, married, 55, manager of hotel, born New York, USA
Jane Jzod, wife, married, 59, born Hackney, Middlesex
Emily Clara Jzod, daughter, unmarried, 19, barmaid, born London, Middlesex

The others listed with them are boarders and servants.

I couldn't find them on the 1861 census even by searching Jzod, Tzod and just searching for Williams born in the USA/America/New York and any other way I could think of.

thanks Jaquie

We have since found out his father John William Izod dies in NY in 1855 so maybe william was in NY dealing with his affairs. We have also found Jane in 1881 living with Emily who has married a William Hooper, however William Henry Izod doesn't die until 1886 and she calls herself a widow which is extremely odd

I don't know what they did on the census in the UK but on the US census sometimes if a couple were divorced a person would be put down as a widow/widower on the census. Is it possible William and Jane were separated/divorced?

I found an old newspaper reference in the Maryland Sun on March 20, 1855 that states: "Another of the old veterans of 1812 has gone.  John W. Izod, who served ten years in the American army, and all through the war of 1812, died on thursday."

Mer I thank you for this and also confirm I have found this in the NEW YORK TIMES "In this City, on Wednesday evening, March 18, JOHN W. IZOD, veteran of the war of 1812, aged 76 years. The friends of the family, and the Veteran Corps, are invited to attend the funeral, on Sunday, 18th inst., at 1 o'clock P. M., at 214 West 36th-st."

I am gjil's partner and now I wonder how easy it is to find details of his war service.

Is there some kind people out there who have an Ancestry.com subscription who could look up the following

1. John William Izod's arrival in New York between 1779 and 1812 (when he fought for the USA in the war of that year.

2. His marriage to Mary Ann (Bird) about 1814

3. The arrival of William Henry Izod in England before 1841

4. the arrival of Theodore Izod and family after 1891 in the USA.

and to be really cheeky any other info on the Izod's in the USA
