william Fulton.
« on: Wednesday 03 December 08 15:35 GMT (UK) »

Hello.
Well here I go again, hoping for help in finding this person.

William Fulton, b, abt 1820, Kilwinning, parents William Fulton and Margaret, ms Dickie.

He is on the 1841 census with his family but can find no trace of him after. My niece at one time, quite a few years back, found a William Fulton living at Her Majestys pleasure. I think this was 1861 census. Not sure if it was my William.

I have also found a marriage of a William Fulton to a Mary Dickie Sep,16 1854 Fenwick, Ayr, but can find no trace of them after this date. This was an extracted record on IGI. Of cource no parents named to help me. The strange thing about this is the fact William,s mother was also a Dickie.

If I remember correctly the parents are not named on the marriages on OPR so don,t want to spend any credits to load it down.

I,ve tried every which way I can think of to find William but he just keeps hiding. Can anybody out there help me?

Mary

Hi Mary,

I think this is the census entry your niece found. It is for 1851.

Address: Prison of Lanark, Lanark
Several names before and after him
William Fulton, m, prisoner, 31, weaver, b. Kilwinning, Ayrshire

The image on SP notes that he was married by the time of the census, so the marriage to Mary Dickie could be correct.

If you pop in the parents' names (William Fulton and Mary Dickie) into Familysearch under the 'All Resources' tab and then scroll to the bottom when it loads, you will get several children b. in Victoria, Australia. They are part of a pedigree resource file so you would need to confirm them. :)

Hi Mary,

Disregard my last post ... I thought I read the marriage was 1845. ::)

I've also just noticed that the person below William in the 1851 census is a Barbara Fulton or Reid, born Stevenston. There is a marriage for a William Fulton and Barbara in 1843, banns both at Kilwinning and Stevenston.

Also several children:
William 1845 Kilwinning (submitted)
Mary 1848 Scotland (submitted)
Robert 1852 Newarthill (submitted)
James 1854 Burnbank (Hamilton) (submitted)
Charles 1857 New Monkland (extracted)
Alexander 1860 Bothwell (extracted)

Robert Fulton 10, b. Bothwell, Lanark
James Fulton 6, b. Old Monkland, Lanark
Charles Fulton 3, b. New Monkland, Lanark
Alex Fulton 5 Months, b. Bothwell, Lanark

Address: Cleekhimin Row, Bothwell, Lanark

In 1851, the first born William and Mary are staying with their maternal grandparents whilst their parents are somewhat indisposed  ::)  All the Reids are showing as born in Stevenson:

Robert Reid 51, pointsman
Mary Reid 50
John Reid 16
Robert Reid 11
Alexr Reid 8
William Fulton 6, grandson, b. Irvine
Mary Fulton 3, granddaughter, b. Dalzell, Lanark

Address: Newastlide Rail Dep, Bothwell, Lanark

Potentially Mary this William looks promising. Naming order for children would fit: William/Mary/Robert...pity they then didn't have a Margaret  :) All boys it seems from then on. I'll check the 1871 census just in case.

Hi Mary and Monica,

Monica, Barbara's d.c. confirms parents as Robert Reid, weaver and Mary Reid m.s. Lambie. Barbara died April 3rd 1884 at Raploch, Larkhall. I think this would be what is now Raploch Street ... my great-grandfather lived there when he was young. :)

William registered the death.

I was hoping Mary that we would find that William Fulton and wife Barbara emigrated to PA and were living next door to Ann Fulton and husband James (neatly closing off a few loose end  ::))...but not to be!

No additional clues from further cesuses:

1871: No more children showing, family in Hamilton, William working as a pithead man.
1881: Just William and Barbara showing in Dalserf Lanark with one granddaughter.
1891: Likely Barbara may have died. William shows as boarder at the house of son William and wife Margaret in Coatbridge Lanarkshire.

Monica

Hume, that's great with the additional info  :)

Hi Monica and Hume.
Wow, thanks alot, just came on line and need time to digest all this . If it is the correct William Fulton I,m on home base again.
When I saw the one with William in Aust I thought he was the one as my Williams sister setteled in Victoria  as well . But after reading the rest I feel certain he is the one who is having a little vacation. Wonder what he and his wife could have done to have them put away.
Good thing it wasnt earlier in the centuary or they,d been on their way to Aust, no questions asked.
Must study this now.
Mary
