MONTSERRAT: Leeward Islands Police - **COMPLETED THANKS **
« on: Wednesday 03 December 08 21:04 GMT (UK) »
Thomas Gray was a policeman (RIC) in Ireland until he retired in 1899 aged about 35. I've quite a lot of info on him before 1899 - it's afterwards that I draw a blank! (he would retire just before the 1901 census!!)

his RIC record has the comment ....
 "having been Cond in Cork
Appt Sergt Major Galway and Mayo
in the Leeward Islands Police"

I think Cond means "connected"

does anyone know anything about the Leeward Islands Police?
did Irish men go there ?to train police there?

any suggestions?

I assume you are talking about the West Indies?  Are you living in Ireland?  Have you tried contacting the Museum and asking there?

It's hard to help without knowing more really...

Would Cond stand for "Conditioned" as in trained...also, he was appt Sergt Major Galway & Mayo...how could that then be "in" the leewards Island Police...UNLESS, it could possibly refer to the Islands off Mayo & Galway?

hi Daisy Loo
Yes, I'm living in Ireland. I presume it's the West Indies - I've not heard of the islands on the west coast being called Leeward (and I seem to remember that there were few, if any, police on them until fairly recently). Do you mean the Garda Museum in Dublin Castle?

the bit in quotes was taken direct from his RIC record. I've looked at several RIC records, and usually Cond seems to mean "connected" e.g. Cond in Cork often means that his wife was from there (his wife wasn't, though he probably had cousins there.)

According to his record, he didn't serve in Galway, and was a Sergeant when he was in Mayo.

My imagination was thinking - did the RIC train some West Indies policemen in Galway??? - did some RIC men go to West Indies???

I hoped some Leeward Islander might know ............?

Yes, the one in Dublin Castle...is that where you got the records from in the first place?  I just wondered (as there seems to be some kind of Historical Society) if there was anyone there that could help you.

It just seems very odd, that the Irish Police would be connected to Islands, that were under different counties rule.

Also, these Islands all have their own names, and the reason they are called leeward, is due to the direction of the winds that blow there apparently.

Although there weren't police on the actual islands off Galway/Mayo, surely the police on mainland were in charge of the islands as well?

If he didn't serve in Galway, how come Galway is mentioned in his service record?  Could he have been stationed in Mayo, but had duties over Galway and mayo?

gatower[at]iol.ie.  That's the email for the History & rchives at the museum, just in case you haven't already got it.

My answer may not be of any use to you, but it's keeping your thread at the top :)

thanks, Reg, interesting site! had a quick look - will go back.

Daisy loo, I looked up his records in the National Archive - they have copies of all the stuff from Kew.
If he didn't serve in Galway, how come Galway is mentioned in his service record?
.... your guess is as good as mine!!

I'll follow up that email presently -thanks for taking the trouble

Thank you Bob

I've just begun to see that my geography of the West Indies is pretty awful -
I didn't know that the Virgin islands were part of Leeward islands,
or that the US ruled some of them.

I read that some Colonial Policemen were trained by the RIC in Dublin,
but it only mentions Jamaica and Trinidad in the Caribbean.

(I think Galway, Mayo are red herrings - stuff carelessly written in wrong column)

Now that my Googling skills have improved, I've found another small clue.
The national Archive in Kew has a file CO152/241 which mentions his application for the Post of SegeantMajor of Police in Montserrat.
It'll be a while before I'm back near London, but when I am I'll follow this up.

In the meantime, could anyone fill me in on Censuses in Montserrat? around 1900- 1930 let's say
