ROWSE/ROUSE/ROUS Family - Truro and local area
« on: Sunday 18 January 09 12:30 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone

Im trying to find out some more about my 9xGt Grandfather: Anthony ROWSE baptised on 22nd March 1618/19 at St Mary's Church, Truro. The IGI named his Father as Wilhelmi ROWSE (William?).

There is a thought that Anthony's Father was William ROWSE, an MP for Truro in the 17th Century and that he was descended from the ROWSE Family of Halton.

"My" Anthony married Frances MAUNDER at Truro in 1647 and produced a son, also named Anthony, born in 1658 that at some stage moved to St Agnes where my ROWSE line continues.

Id be grateful to hear from anyone with connections to the ROWSE's or MAUNDER's and whether or not anyone can help on the ancestry of Anthony, born 1618!

Thanks, Graham

Graham:   Have just seen your entry.    Much work has been done on the ROUSE/ROUS/ROWSE family of Devon and Cornwall.  Copies of Street's A Genealogy of the Rouses of Devon and Peters' A Rouse Family of Devon (both include Cornish branches) are in West Country Studies library, Devon FHS library (both in Exeter) and the Soc. of Genealogists (London)   To date it has been impossible proving that the Anthony bap Truro 1619 was the son of William, the one-time MP for Truro (William married Mary Robarts).
The Anthony born 1658  was 3rd child of Anthony and Frances and from them the line from St Agnes is well documented to the present day although Burke once carried an entirely erroneous family tree.  (No descent is known from Anthony's brother or sister  -  Stephen baptised 1654 and Frances bap 1655)
Col. David Rouse (pronounced Roose) of this family has only recently died
The likelihood is that any ROUS person born in Devon or Cornwall before 1600  that (so far) cannot be proved to be linked to the main line at St. Dominic or Modbury came from a junior line two, three or more generations before Sir Anthony Rous (died 1620) of Halton at St. Dominic.

Hello Rufulogica

Thanks very much indeed for your very helpful reply.

I had a feeling that this was the case, as Ive tried hard to prove that Anthony, bapt 1619 was the son of William Rouse.

Perhaps it'll have to remain as one of those possibles and a mystery.

Thanks again

Best wishes, Graham

re Visitation post, thank you for that.  Since the eldest son inherited all   -  or most of  -  his father's wealth (and taxation was a factor in carrying out the Visitation, done in England by a Herald), it was necessary to establish an inherited line of inheritance from as far back as possible.   It was not necessary to note all  siblings which is why it is so difficult establishing junior lines of any family prior to about 1550

Sorry, but I don't think that is necessarily the case.  Heralds are officers of the College of Arms and have no role in taxation at all.  The visitations were carried out for the purposes of recording the use of coats of arms.  For this reason they recorded the pedigrees of the families using coats of arms.  The families had to prove their entitlement to these arms either by grant or by long use.  The pedigrees show the descent of the right to arms.
