Home Children: Susan Haynes (Canada -1910)
« on: Thursday 22 January 09 19:46 GMT (UK) »
I'm searching for Susan Haynes, born 25th Dec 1901 in Gnosall Staffordshire.

She emigrated to Canada (through Barnados) on S.S Sicillian, departing from Liverpool on 28 May 1910 and arriving in Quebec on 10 June 1910. The final destination was Peterborough, Ontario.

Susan was also known as Bessie on some records. I've searched the Canadian census for 1911, looking for both names but with no joy.

I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions about searching for her, or any info.

Many Thanks,

Rach

Hi Rach, and welcome to rootschat... !
Well I'll do my utmost to try & find her in the 1911...will look right away....
but naming the parents just in case someone can find a marriage...(hopefully it was before the privacy laws kick in!) would be a great idea!

Thanks J.J.

Her parents were Matthew & Lucy Haynes. Matthew died in 1905 and Lucy remarried in 1908 to Alfred Martin. She may have been know as Louisa instead of Lucy though.

Susans brothers and sisters were Lucy Catherine, John, Mary, Thomas, Matthew, and James.
Mary, Thomas and James were sent to Canada and Matthew went to Australia.

The only Susan Haynes I see in Newport, Sh. district on the Freebmd is Susan Annie 1902, so we may also have the wrong month up in the first query? J.J.
Have looked through Peterborough, and can't see her at all...I've found an adopted Percy & Nellie so far, both down as born Ontario...and an Elizabeth imm.1909...also a Home child, whom I've reported to the BHC record keepers on the census site...naming them here in case anyone is ever looking for them...

So now will branch out further into Ontario to look for for mistranscriptions....

Mother's surname Handley (Beckett after 1st marriage)
other search for Thomas and Mary Haynes

Hi Rach,

Have you obtained any records that Barnados might have had on Susan?

Romilly.

Hello

Maybe she won't be found on the census. Could someone check Ontario deaths on ancestry to see if she possibly died.

:P Was hoping maybe the younger ones might be in the same area if I look for others of similar age imm. same time, but NO... :P
There were children as young as 8 and nine...they couldn't even care for them a few years before dumping them
out into service??...They are all over the place, I'm afraid, Edith Morris is in Port Hope, Durham,  Ethel Purcell is in
Bexley Township, Edith Marcon is in Gwillumbury North ...but no sign of your gal in Ontario
Found an adopted home child, Dorothy Haynes imm. 1911 / Fredericton
checked through Ontario, then all Canada...but couldn't see her...Not saying she's not there, just that she's eluding my search...and I looked into homes for females born around the age without parents, just in case...which is why I found the others...
and of course she might have been adopted, as well, as sometimes happened...
