« on: Monday 02 February 09 02:10 GMT (UK) »
I am searching for information about Captain Daniel Friend I know he was master of the barque Canton in 1848 I believe he died at sea.  I would like to know how & when he died and what Port was in headed for at the time of his death.

There were several vessels with the name Canton, including a barque which sank in August 1847 en route from Hull to Quebec but that was commanded by a Captain Tonge.

A google search brought up some references for Captain Daniel Friend commanding the Canton on a voyage from England to Australia (Port Adelaide) in 1846.

Have you got his Will from National Archives ? http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/details-result.asp?queryType=1&resultcount=1&Edoc_Id=135238. It was proved in March 1849 so he must have died before then.

The 1849 Death Duty Register Index confirms that he died at sea on the "Canton".  Executor George Friend of Deptford.

PC 1 folio 118 - the DD ledgers at National Archives should disclose details of the estate.

Here's something - from the Daily News 23 February  1849:

"the ship Canton from Sydney New South Wales was cast away on the Marianas in October; out of a crew of 25 only 5 were saved, the second and third mates and three seamen "

There's a report in the The Maitland Mercury and Hunter River General Advertiser of 17 June 1848 referring to English newspapers up to 19 February having been brought to Sydney by the Canton.

So presumably she left England around 20 February and arrived Sydney in early June of 1848.

Thanks for all your information I have a copy of Captain Daniel Friend's probated will however I did not know how he died other than being at sea.  Your advice is most helpful when the ship left Sydney for Hong Kong on 2/9/1848 I have information via The Shipping Gazette and Sydney General Trade List dated 2/9/1848 that there were 3 passengers on board one being D. Friend I would like to know what happened to this person.   I will follow up your information on this.

Regards
