Hi OSP,
Looks interesting ... the written record is very definitely CRAPP, just before CRAPPER!
But I suppose it could depend on how well the reporter spoke and how well the registrar listened!
I was not convinced by the death of a Benjamin Crabb in 1848 in Frome, although the date is pretty good, as Lucy Crabb is Lucy Scantlebury Crabb. Sort of fits with Benjamin dying 1848, Catherine and Eliza lodged with John Scantlebury and then..., well we can only guess!
I wonder if either of the death certs would give any clues as to whether they are my boy?
I wonder how and why a woolcomber from Callington would be in Frome up in Somerset. A long way from home in those days for a poor person.
Looks like James (b. 1853, bap. 1854) died in 1854 along with Catherine.
So, we now have the likely parents of Benjamin(1815), James and Esther(nee Jenkins).
By a little detective work, and the assumption that Crabb families living next door are related, then ...
Evidence that a brother William(1806) married Margery and had children.
Also, a sister Julia, and another Esther who married a Gilbert, son Thomas (1849)
Another sister probably married an Edgecombe(Edgecumbe), children Eliza(1823)and Jane(1835).
So, maybe I have some extra family ...
Please feel free to dip in ...
I wonder who Grace Crabb was on the MC? A widow in 1841, age 65. In 1851 a couple but one stands out ... with son William from Callington.
Cheers,
Rob
PS Richard Vercoe, Benjamin's employer married Elizabeth SMITH ... I am guessing now that
Catherine was her sister.
PPS Various census pages show families next to each other with "GOOD" names, eg Vercoe, Smith, Scantlebury and Hawke.
