Thanks so much Rob. So far I have not really spent much time on this branch of my tree, but getting interested in the Scantlebury's now too. Please let me know if there are any connections. Which part of the UK are you ?

Hi G,

I'm up in the frozen North, well, York and most of the time the streets and pavements have been clear and dry! Very little sign of snow at all!

I'll let you know if anything relating to Scantlebury comes up.

Hi

Okay.  Lucy Scantlebury's birth cert does not give a father's name ...

The marriage of Benjamin Crabb to Catherine Smith in Bodmin, 1843 says ...
   Both aged 26
Batchelor and Spinster (which is suspicious if Caroline was dead!)
Father of Benjamin is James Crabb, Inn Keeper
Father of Catherine is James Smith, Tailor (might be Sailor)

witneses ... William Hawke and Grace Crabb and another registrar. No Smiths.

Looks like Caroline died and he re-married.

Also, a newpaper report in 1843 places a Benjamin Crabb working for Richard Vercoe, a wool stapler with washroom and 2 wool combing roooms., in Bodmin.

Nicely places Eliza ion Bodmin for the 1851.

So, the baptism of Benjamin in 1815 to James and Esther in Callington looks like
my boy eh?

Looks like Catherine died in March 1854 ( Bodmin, 5c/75)

I wonder if the James in 1853 is not Benjamin's, but she named him after his father.

Although, there's a death in 1848 in Frome, which might be him ...

Still waiting for Eliza's BC.

But, perhaps the puzzle is coming together .. albeit slowly!

Regards

Rob

OK, the jury's back ...

Eliza Crabb  b 21 July 1840

Father Benjamin Crabb, woolcomber

Mother ... CATHERINE CRABB (formerly SMITH)

So, Caroline NEVER existed ... as we were beginning to suspect.

Not married until 1843, so were going by as husband and wife until then, I guess.

there's a death registration in Liskeard district covering Callington which may be of interest - it appears using 'phonetic search surnames' on FreeBmd.

Benjamin Crapp march qtr 1851 Liskeard vol 9 pg 129

Hi OSP,

Looks interesting ... the written record is very definitely CRAPP, just before CRAPPER!

But I suppose it could depend on how well the reporter spoke and how well the registrar listened!

I was not convinced by the death of a Benjamin Crabb in 1848 in Frome, although the date is pretty good, as Lucy Crabb is Lucy Scantlebury Crabb. Sort of fits with Benjamin dying 1848, Catherine and Eliza lodged with John Scantlebury and then..., well we can only guess!

I wonder  if either of the death certs would give any clues as to whether they are my boy?

I wonder how and why a woolcomber from Callington would be in Frome up in Somerset. A long way from home in those days for a poor person.

Looks like James (b. 1853, bap. 1854) died in 1854 along with Catherine.

So, we now have the likely parents of Benjamin(1815), James and Esther(nee Jenkins).

By a little detective work, and the assumption that Crabb families living next door are related, then ...

Evidence that a brother William(1806) married Margery and had children.

Also, a sister Julia, and another Esther who married a Gilbert, son Thomas (1849)

Another sister probably married an Edgecombe(Edgecumbe), children Eliza(1823)and Jane(1835).

So, maybe I have some extra family ...

Please feel free to dip in ...

I wonder who Grace Crabb was on the MC?  A widow in 1841, age 65. In 1851 a couple but one stands out ... with son William from Callington.

Cheers,

Rob

PS Richard Vercoe, Benjamin's employer married Elizabeth SMITH ... I am guessing now that
Catherine was her sister.

PPS Various census pages show families next to each other with "GOOD" names, eg Vercoe, Smith, Scantlebury and Hawke.

that's a problem with an adult male dying - not much info. The cert should give age, address & occupation, but won't say husband of...., although Catherine might have registered the death.

Catherine's death cert might be more helpful as it should say wife/widow of.... and his occupation depending on who gave the info.
My gt, gt, gt grandmother's death was registered by her much younger half-brother and he gave the wrong first name for her husband who had died about 20 years earlier, so it's sort of forgiveable, but took me quite a while to work out as the couple never appear together on a census.

Catherines DC says "wife of Benjamin Crabb" ... address, Union workhouse, Bodmin

James 1843 is Benjamin and Catherine's, died 1 year later of "a fit", an inquest was held.

James 1853 is Catherine's, no father named ... maybe John Scantlebury again?
James died 1854, address Union workhouse.

The Will of James Crabb, gentleman of Callington left money and property to Benjamin Crabb in 1856, proved 1857. James Crabb ran the Bull's Head Inn, Callington, 1823 and also in the 1830's.

He left a farm and land at Trewoodlow to his daughter Julia Wills Crabb. Property and money (£500 a piece) to sons, including Benjamin.

If this is the same Benjamin, I wonder what happened to him? No death records or re-marriages.

Interesting report  STA/693c/1437 shows a Benjamin Crabb in court for not paying money for shares in a mine (which probably failed) with other "adventurers". Dated 1864.
