  Hello willow154,
So much info, Elizabeth was born 1841, and Margaret b Kirklinton abt 1878 was illegitimate so that rules out john johnston so ???.
        Cheers cundy

Hi cundy,
Sorry, I think you're probably a bit overwhelmed with all the information. It seemed a straight-forward question, and we've brought forward lots of others.
I found Margaret's baptism  on www.familysearch.org.
The only way to really know the truth (as far as you can know) is by getting hold of the birth and marriage certificates. Those, plus the parish register entries will tell you more about your ancestors. Some parish registers give lots of little snippets about families.
It certainly seems as if the family were very successful - farm of 230 - 250acres - goodness!  Elizabeth and her family had a lot to be proud of. Have you looked for family wills, cundy? I would have thought there might be some.
Re. William Moffat's stud farm - I found a little bit of information for you. There is a book (the library might be able to trace it for you; or it might be available from somewhere like abe books, who deal with old and second hand books):
The Clydesdale Stud-Book 1888
by Clydesdale Horse Society of Great Britain and Ireland.
Your ancestor William Moffat apparently is mentioned in this. (google booksearch brought it up).
I know you need time to digest all of this, but if you need any help please ask. I'm sure it will all fall into place.
Kind regards,
Paulene :)

Hi cundy,
Where did you try?

I would think this is the right one:
Births Sep 1860
JOHNSON Mary Ann   Longtown   10b   374.

But, if it was me I would write to the local register office:
The Register Office, 23 Portland Square, Carlisle, CA1 1PE.

http://www.cumbria.gov.uk/registration/wheretofindus/carlisle.asp

All old Longtown certificates are now kept at the Carlisle Register Office.

Say you are looking for Mary Ann Johnson's birth certificate, whose mother was named Elizabeth (born and baptised at Kirklinton). That way they will only send it to you if the details match, cundy.
Include you cheque for £7.00 made out to (*might be best to check this with them first) Superintendent Registrar.

If I'm not sure I've got the right certificate I ususally write to the local register office - that way you don't waste any money if it is the wrong one, and they simply return your cheque.

The other option is to telephone to ask them if the above certificate is the right one - they cannot tell you what is on it, but if you tell them the child's mother's name and birthplace they might confirm whether you have located the right one.
(telephone number - 01228 607434).

Hope this makes sense, cundy.
Good luck,
Paulene :)

 Hello willow154,
I applied at Carlisle Reg office, but there was no-correct combination of parent names ie the father was correct but mother wrong or vice verse, I'm unsure the way the name has altered from JOHNSTONE to JOHNSON.
        Cheeas  cundy.

Hi cundy,
So no combinations with the mother as Elizabeth and father as George -  or just with father as John and mother as Elizabeth?

 Hello willow154,
No names given just none of the entries corresponded with the information ie father, mother, occupation. there was one ,occupation o/k mother o/k but not the father,
                  Cheers cundy.
