There are a couple of records for Adam Leishman on ancestry.ca - a passenger list and a border crossing.  But after giving you this tantalizing information, I have to say that I do not have a sub so I can't look it up for you!  I do have one for findmypast but nothing there as the passenger lists start in 1890.

But there are other helpful RCs here who have ancestry subs and will no doubt do a quick lookup for you.

Fingers crossed it is your Adam!

Yours not very helpfully,

Hi Lynwen

I have also looked at Ancestry but alas like you do not have sub :( had a look at FindMyPast but nothing there either :(. This info I seek is for another that is tracing the same name as me(Leishman)but no connection to mine. Sometime a fresh pair of eyes can help as I know from experience, I also know this researcher has tried for so long to find this info.
Fingers been crossed since I posted this ;)

Hello Fiona

There are lots of matches coming up for Adam. I don't know where to start. Do you already have anything for him?

There's an 1891 Census of Canada

Canadian passenger lists for 1905

I have found US censuses for 1900, 1910 (now married) and 1920.

. . . . .and possibly even more!

Will have a better look and transcribe some for you.

Angela

The earliest date I can find is for an A E Leishman sailing on the 'Devonia' March 26 1889

There's very little passenger info on these early records

A E Leishman, age 20, Occupation: Nil, England, USA, 2
(Unfortunately no headings at the top of each column) Looks like the USA is his destination and possibly 2 pieces of luggage, but not sure.

Next record:
Adam Leishman, canadian Passenger lists, Quebec, 1906, June
Age 26 (Can't read occupation-sorry) Scotch, East Lothian, destination Montreal

Will now look for more

1891 Census of Canada>Territories>Alberta>Lethbridge
RG31, T-6290 to T-6427

Charles Leishman, 40, m, Scottish (& both parents Scottish) C Presb, Miner
Adam, 20, Scottish (& both parents Scottish) C Presb.

This is a very poor quality census with very little info

Do you have the USA census records for him in Montana?

Hi Angela

Thanks for your help with the look ups. Info I have is limited but will add what I can,no point in adding info for his family as they stayed in Scotland although if it helps with an occupation and Adam followed in his fathers footsteps his occupation may have been a papermaker as they lived in Papermill  cottage,Greenock(Greenock has a shipping port) in 1881 by 1891 his family had moved to nearby Linwood but Adam was gone by then.

Adam Leishman babt1871, Portobella,Midlothian
1881 census results, Adam was aged 10,living in Greenock
Adam m Charlotte Gray Evans abt1913 not sure if  in USA or Canada
emigrated to Canada possibly between 1881 and 1891,unsure if he travelled alone
moved from Canada to live and work in Stockett,Montana but died in Spokane,WA 1941.

all help is welcomed.

1900 Montana Cascade Sand Coulee
Roll T623_910 Page 6A Dist 151

Leishman Adam, boarder, white, male, born Oct 1872, age 27, single.
Himself and parents all born Scotland. Arrival 1898, fireman. Able to read & write. Can speak English.

There are others in the household, but it doesn't look as though they have any connection.
