I had another look for him on the 1911 Canada census but came up empty. You can now search it by name for free at Library and Archives Canada. Here's the link:
http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/census/Pages/census.aspx

The 1921 Canada has now been released but it is still being indexed. You may want to bump the thread in about a month or so as I believe it should be searchable by sometime in October from what I recall.

Hi All:

Since you have been looking for a long time for William Kane, you may have already seen and discounted this one. But, just in case, what about this William in Alberta on the 1916 census:

http://www.rootschat.com/links/0wct/

He is 32, born in Scotland, immigrated in 1906, and is listed in Banff working as a Second Engineer at a Hotel.

Sami, thanks! This looks very likely! It states that he is married. Where could I find details of the marriage?

Hi Kooky:

Hard to say where he got married. I'm guessing that the Hotel referred to was the CP Railway Hotel at Lake Louise. If he was employed as a Second Engineer for the CPR his residence was not necessarily in Banff, Alberta but could have been anywhere along the CPR route. As an example one of my great uncles worked for the CPR and his regular shift was the run from Vancouver to Winnipeg and back. His residence was in Vancouver but he married in Winnipeg.

It would help if you could find William on the 1911 Census through the link that Jacquie provided.

Did he have a middle name? There is a marriage record for a William John Kane/Alexandrina McLeod in Winnipeg, Manitoba - 14/11/1913 that is possible. You can search on the following link:

http://vitalstats.gov.mb.ca/Query.php

I'll do some more looking.

That's a different William. After finding some border crossing documents for Alexandrina which show they moved to California I found a Declaration of Intent for US citizenship which shows William John Kane was born in Ireland in 1889.

From looking at SP, the William Kane born in 1882 didn't have a middle name on his birth registration.

Thanks for all your input! All the official documents I have about William state that he is just William.
eg birth certificate,1891 and 1901 census. There is no middle name. I find this odd because his 2 older bros. have 2 names :- Robert Henry + Hugh Alexander. His younger brother is James Stewart. I am not at home at present, I am baby sitting my grandson. This means I do not have access to any records.

Hi Kooky:

Well this is a long shot, but on the same 1916 census for the Hotel in Banff there is a Winifred Kane. She is married, 30, born in England, immigrated in 1910, works in the Laundry at the hotel:

I'm wondering if she is William's wife?

Hi Kooky,

I have the surname Kane in my family - don't know if there's a connection though. Mine were of Irish origin (Derry), living in Wishaw, Cambusnethan & Penty, Shotts, both Lanarkshire.

Anyway whether or not, to date I have this list of spelling variations on certs. & census records:-

Kane, Kain, Kaine, Kean, Cain, Caine & "Rane" on a transcribed census & cost me a fortune trying to locate certs.  ???  so I don't envy your task  ;D

Annie,
South Uist, Inverness-shire, Scotland:- Bowie, Campbell, Cumming, Currie

Ireland:- Cullen, Flannigan (Derry), Donahoe/Donaghue (variants) (Cork), McCrate (Tipperary), Mellon, Tol(l)and (Donegal & Tyrone)

Newcastle-on-Tyne/Durham (Northumberland):- Harrison, Jude, Kemp, Lunn, Mellon, Robson, Stirling

Kettering, Northampton:- MacKinnon

Canada:- Callaghan, Cumming, MacPhee
