Manley Llantrisant 1901
« on: Thursday 17 February 05 18:53 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for 3 MANLEY brothers who all went to Llantrisant in Wales to work in the Welsh coal mines.
All were born in Hemyock Devon
William Manley b 1861
Tom Manley b 1878
Sydney b 1879 (lived Tonyrefail?)

Any info about addresses, wives, family etc would be gratefully received.

rumour has it that Tom was awarded British Empire medal(?) for services to mining or trade unions. How can I find out if it's true?

thanks Jane

Thank you for the info about the brothers.

Knowing williams wife and children will help me find him in 1891, which i'm missing.

I am going to live in the hope that, Manley Close is named after us!! Fame (if not fortune) at last !

I have found your missing William MANLEY in 1891.

The details are on FreeCEN. http://freecen.rootsweb.com

I don't think I am able to post actual details due to FreeCEN copyright restriction:
Reproduction of FreeCEN data in any form whatsoever without the express permission of the copyright owners is forbidden.

I can tell you the census reference is:
RG12/4417 Llantrisant Glamorgan ED 6
folio 114 page 5 schedule 21
address Chapel road, Tonyrefail.

William of Hemyock Devon is listed there with his wife & children.

Just log into FreeCEN, click Search Database. Specify 1891 as year, surname MANLEY, forename WILLIAM, county GLAMORGAN, census place LLANTRISANT-GLA (1891).

Hi Jane,
I hope you don't mind me writing after all this time, but I am relativeley new to this forum. I was reading the old postings when I saw your thread. The name Manley rang a bell for me.
My maternal grandfather lived in Tonyrefail. He was active with the trade union as a miner and also a local councillor. The council then was Llantwit Fadre Rural Council. I remember him talking about a "Tom Manley" when I was a child. If my memory serves me right he was a friend and a fellow councillor to my grandfather (Albert George Martin).
SS from The Rhondda mentioned that there was a street named "Manley Close" in Tonyrefail, there is also a street named "Martin Crescent". It appears that there was a practice of naming streets after councillors. This information may not help with your family research but it may be of interest to you.

Best of luck with your search and a Happy New Year to you.

hello Big-Al,

Thanks very much for taking the time to reply to this thread.

This is the first confirmation outside of family folklore, that Tom Manley, was active in trade unions. We did not know that he was a councillor, so I will explore that avenue.
Do you happen to know about what time scale we are talking about?

I really like the stories that surround the "nuts and bolts" of the dates and often get side tracked down a history research etc. So it is really nice to know that we are famous and have a Close named after us!!

Tom is the brother that I know least about, so if you know any more about him I would be very pleased to reeive this info.

Thanks again,
Jane

Hi Jane,
First thing for me to do is make a correction to my last message. It was my Paternal grandfather not maternal.
Like you I enjoy finding out about the social history as well as the family. At the moment I do not have to hand a lot of information about Tom Manley, but give me a little time and I will dig through my pile of papers and maybe get you some contacts.
I will post as soon as I get something.
Best of luck,
Big-Al
