Hospital Record, help deciphering please :)
« on: Thursday 26 March 09 18:05 GMT (UK) »
Hi guys, I hope I have posted this query in the right place.

I have recently received some medical records for my direct ancestor and it was a bitersweet mment when I opened te record to find out I could not read a single word on the pages! Nevertheless I spet most of last night trying to decipher theses somewhat depressing papers, and I have cracked most of the written word on them. However some of the record I still cannot fathom.

This is where I ask you please to come in :D

I have transcribed the records, and have attached the photocopies of them, along with what I can make out.

I look forward to hearing all of your opinions.

Thankyou for reading,

Regards,

Reaybo M

I posted before seeing yours - I'll keep at it and then we (all!) can compare notes. Some of the medical terms are tricky.

There are still some blank areas, but maybe they can be filled in eventually:

Acute Pneumonia

Bernard Owens aet. 44
Admitted March 24th complaining of
pain in the right side and cough. Patient
is a labourer and on Monday March 18th
he got a chill and on Monday evening patient
felt unwell and the pain in the chest began
on the same evening and has never left him.
Up till this illness patient has been a strong
man & for the last 25 years he has not been
confined to bed from sickness. Patient never
had "bronchitis".

Pulse 108 full and fairly strong.
Respirations 32. Patient cannot take a
deep breath on account of the pain in the
right side.

On examination of the chest there is found to
be marked dulness all over the right side
of the chest front and back and also in
the axillary region, and on auscultation
over this dull area there is found to be
marked tubular breathing with fine crepitation
at the end of inspiration. Over this side
the V.F. is increased and the V.R. is also
much more marked than on the left side.

Pulmonary percussion on the left side is
quite [----ed] & the [R.M.?] though somewhat
puerile is quite free from rales.

Apex beat is in the 5th left intercostal
space a little to the right of the nipple line

Cardiac dulness is normal and the cardiac
sounds are quite [----]. There is no
Hepatic displacement.

Tongue is dry and coated with a thick
brown fur. Bowels regular.

There is now no swelling of the feet or
limbs nor any swelling of the abdomen.
The radial arteries are fairly straight but
the temporals are somewhat tortuous and
hard.

Urine scanty [--] 6 oz. being passed during
first 12 hrs after admission. Sp[ecific] Gr[avity] 1020
and reactive, high colour, a slight quantity
of albumin and a considerable quantity of chlorides.

Patient has very little cough and up till
present time he has had no expectoration.
Face is fairly well coloured but the lips
are slightly pale.

On admission patient's temperature was
103[degrees].2. There is no herpetic eruption on
the lips.

Died. March 27th.
