Charles Edmond LEACH - NSW
« on: Thursday 02 April 09 23:15 BST (UK) »
My Great Great Uncle Charles Edmond Leach was born in 1879 Brighton england .  He married Beatrice Bennett born 1882 in Sheffield England.  They married in 1904 in Sheffield England.  They had a daughter Nora born 1907 Sheffield.  They all emigrated to NSW Australia about 1914 (according to Charles death certificate.)  Whilst in Australia they had a daughter Maisie 1917.

Nora went on to marry Charles Gordon Quested in 1935 Burntwood Australia.

Maisie went on to marry George Harold Rootham in 1943 Sydney NSW Australia.

Charles was a portmanteau maker with his father in England and I have found him in a few of the Sands Directory and he was a portmanteau maker whilst in Australia.

Charles died in 1960 his address in Olive street Fairfield Australia and Beatrice in 1969.

Can anyone help me to find out when they actually emigrated to Australia and any more information
concerning their lives after emigrating.  Where Charles worked and if there is any way of finding any relatives of theirs.  Any information on where they lived any photos of them and where they lived.  I don't know any reason behind them emigrating but they fascinate me and I feel they were obviously very brave heading off across the world to a new country leaving behind all their family and friends and would love to learn as much about them as possible!

Hi

FindMyPast Migration search
http://www.findmypast.com/home.jsp

Shows a Nora LEACH travelling to Sydney Australia out of London, in 1912.
On the same ship was a Female LEACH.
Index doesn't give ages for either or the name of the other female - but guesses are, it is mother& daughter.

It was not uncommon for the man/husband/father to travel ahead of a wife & children. There are two possibles for Charles on FindMyPast - but I suspect the one into Sydney may be him:
Charles LEACH b abt 1879 - 1911 London to Fremantle
Chas. E LEACH b UNK - 1911 London to Sydney

Cheers

Hi,
i have searched the NSW BDM's at http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/search.htm
and found that Nora's husband died in 1948 and she remarried in 1957

Death:
Registration :13221
Date :1948
Name: QUESTED      CHARLES GORDON
Father: WILLIAM
Mother :AGNES
Place: LIVERPOOL

Marriage:
registration:24349
Date:1957
Man: ROBINSON      PETER JOHN
Woman:QUESTED      NORA MARGARET
Place:LIVERPOOL

As both of these marriages occured after the birth record cut off date of 1908, I cannot tell you if she had any children from either marriage.
Peter Robinson and Nora aren't listed as deaths in NSW prior to 1978.

Neither George or Maisie Rootham are listed in the Death records for NSW up to 1978, and as their children would have been born post 1908, I cannot tell you if there were any children although if Maisie was short for Margaret there is a Rootham death with  father George and mother Margaret listed. They also could have moved to another state of course! :D

Registration:30931
Year:1950
Name: ROOTHAM      LILY AMELIA D
Father:GEORGE
Mother:MARGARET
Place: MARRICKVILLE

Cheers
Susie

Here is George Harold ROOTHAM's obit
http://notices.smh.com.au/death/30223/notice.aspx

he died age 95 just under 2 years ago in May 2007, in Redhead, Sydney, NSW.
He was  husband of M****  a father of 3, a grandfather & great-grandfather - but not posting the names on Rootschat, for privacy reasons. I think the notice infers his wife survived him.    And I think she is currently listed in the Aussie White pages phone directory. You will find that listing  here, and also a possible listing for the son.

http://www.whitepages.com.au/wp/initResSearch.do

Search only for the SURNAME in the state of NSW.

Cheers  ;D

Hi,
Redhead is part of Lake Macquarie Shire and is near Belmont/Swansea.....it's a very beautiful beach.....if not a tad rough for surfing on occasions. ;D

You pass through the outskirts of Redhead when you are going from Newcastle to Swansea.

Cheers

Thank you for this information I have looked at the records and this is him married to Maisie and mention his father as well .  It is nice to know there are so many helpful people around as its hard to find what websites are available around the world that you can look at the records online and get so much more information.
Thank you for your time :D
