Hi Jen,

Are you sure the word after the possible "Gibson" starts with a "C"?  To me it looks an awful lot like the "b" in "both" in the 2nd line!

Also, the letter at the end of that word is the same as the one at the beginning of what I originally thought was "God" in the 2nd line, so if we could figure out what that letter is, it would help a lot!

I have added some other entries in the same hand ...

it seems as if the first word in the 2nd line must be "booked", and at the end of the 3rd/start of the 4th line it is "Confirmed"

Does that mean the word at the end of the 5th line is "bark??? ???

No, I think it's 'consigned'. (long s in the middle of the word).

I'm afraid I don't know what this word is, not being familiar with Scottish records, but I'm fairly certain it isn't booked  :(

Right ... I can see that.  But it seems that each entry has a similar formula:

... "booked" (or something similar) then a date, in the case of Samuel and Agnes, November 6th (seems like the minister made a mistake, hence the heavy ink), then "Consigned" followed by something that looks like "4 hbb" - could this be a shorthand for reading the banns, or something?

I think "Gibson" is actually "given", so it is something like "given back", though I can't think what that's all about

Here another example containing the word consigned http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,334462.msg2140967.html#msg2140967

I think the number after the word consigned refers to a sum of money.

Correct, Jennifer - its 4 lb and the next letter is possibly an S* (Scots pounds) I've seen this quite often in Banns/marriage entries.

* see the S in this
