Bikermickau, Torquay is up near Fraser Island which is quite a way from Redciffe.

I know, which suggests that I may recall the location wrong. I was 8 or 9, at least 5 of my siblings went to the same place. We all believe it was at Torquay.

The Bush Children Holiday Home I was at in the 60's wasn't at Redcliffe.
This may have been a Roman Catholic scheme.

Thank you for all the info everyone.  To narrow the search down for her death on her mother's death cert in 1934 (NZ) it lists living children and one is the right age for Ruby. Presuming the info is correct on her mother's death cert her death should be after 1934

SueChris:
I was unable to find a death for your Violet/Ruby Mercer/Smale in Queensland up to 1964 on the fiche at the Archives. I checked deaths for both surnames and checked Mercer and Smale marriages to 1939 in case she had remarried, but nothing I'm afraid. :-\

PianoMan:
Some better luck with your search.  :)
Daniel McSweeney
died 3 June 1930
father: William McSweeney
Mother: Johanna Murphy

You can order the certificate:

An expensive convoluted exercise and you will need to prove your relationship etc etc etc  :-\.  Good luck. ;)

Does this apply to death certs over thirty years old as I noted on the website

http://www.justice.qld.gov.au/859.htm
Certificate access

Historical access provisions for death and marriage certificates have changed, effective 1 March 2009.

These are now:
    * deaths - open access after 30 years
    * marriages - open access after 75 years.

Certificate Access -

Type of access -  Historical
Applicant -    Anyone
Specific requirement  -  Deaths which occurred more than 30 years ago

Does that mean that you don't have to provide relationship, ID etc.

Cheers
Cando

ooooh, you might be right about that Cando. This will will make life a lot easier for PianoMan.

I try not to order Qld certificates if I can help it.  ;)

I just keep my fingers crossed that the deceased has left a will and I can then view the included d/c at the archives and take a copy of it if I wish, for a dollar or two. I can also view d/c's of recently deceased strangers.  :o However I had to have all manner of proof of relationship to purchase my grandparent's marriage certificate despite the fact that we have a rare surname and it was a few months away from open access.  ;D Most peculiar.  ;)

Sorry I forgot that I noticed that you were looking for Smale.  I know that Male is a family name in Qld.  Maybe the S in front of Male was a mistake.

I have been deterred from even applying after being told how difficult and as you say, expensive.

May have second thoughts now :)
