Family tree program advice
« on: Saturday 26 February 05 11:20 GMT (UK) »
Im looking to buy a family tree program to to store, catorgorise and build upon my family tree details. I have all the magazines, reviews and trial discs and im stumped! There is so many and they all keep being upgraded and Im confused! ???

Im willing to invest a good price for something that is worth it, please can you give me some advice on what to look for and what to avoid? Of all the programs Ive considered Im quite keen on the Rootsmagic uk V2.0 wich seems to have good reviews accross the board, what do you think? :)

As I've not tried Rootsmagic ... I Can't comment on that program.
My own preference would be Family Historian which I currently use .... although it is not as powerful in some ways as The Master Genealogist I find it an excellent program.
In many ways it is intuitive to use and I'm still finding out many of its different facilities.

However the bottom line is that you need to find a program that you are comfortable using (what might be intuitive to me could be a nightmare for someone else  ;D ) and regardless of comments pro or anti work with what you are comfortable with....
 we all have our own favourites ... there have been several discussions about this topic in Rootschat.

Make up a list of things that you expect a program to be able to do for you and check these requirments against each program ... a word of warning here though is that no single program will measure up to everything you want.

Hi

I use the The Master Genealogist, Its cheap (about £10) and does everything I need, its easy to use and also has very helpful web site and message board for any problems you may encounter

I use several different programmes but my main one is Legacy. You can download for free a  fully functional version plus you have the option og upgrading to the deluxe version.
You get it here;

There are about 5 pages discussing which software people use.

All the best,
