As I've not tried Rootsmagic ... I Can't comment on that program.
My own preference would be Family Historian which I currently use .... although it is not as powerful in some ways as The Master Genealogist I find it an excellent program.
In many ways it is intuitive to use and I'm still finding out many of its different facilities.
However the bottom line is that you need to find a program that you are comfortable using (what might be intuitive to me could be a nightmare for someone else

) and regardless of comments pro or anti work with what you are comfortable with....
we all have our own favourites ... there have been several discussions about this topic in Rootschat.
Make up a list of things that you expect a program to be able to do for you and check these requirments against each program ... a word of warning here though is that no single program will measure up to everything you want.
