George Thomas Brazier (b1866)
« on: Thursday 06 August 09 11:42 BST (UK) »
GTB was my g grandfather who married a Mary Ann SMITH at St Marks Church, Bexhill 28 Jan 1889 (GRO: Mar 1889 Battle 2b/79) refers.  Mary Ann was the daughter of Caleb SMITH (1827-1897) a Butcher and I thought Susanna THORNTON (b 1829) but this as many others led up the wrong SMITH path :- >:(
I have all the family details of GTB both ancestors and descendants, I have his indentures when he was a carpenter's apprentice and I know he was the landlord of The Globe Inn, Worthing from 1890-1902, finally living in Tower Road, Worthing until his death (whenever that was).
I would be most grateful if I could be put on the right path for Mary Ann's personal and family details and the date of GTB's death.
Many thanks

Hi
Can you give us all the details from the marriage certificate?  Witnesses, ages, occupations etc?  Knowing Mary Ann's age is important.  What census records have you found the couple on?   Where is her place of birth?
www.freebmd.org.uk would be a good place to start looking for Mary Ann's birth and GTB's death .  It is very good coverage up to and around the early 1900s.  Later you may need to look at the full index on a paying site.

Have you found them on the 1911 census? If so that will tell us we are looking after then.

As  a start here is the 1901 census
RG13 958 168 46
George Thomas Brazier age  34 licensed victualler b Southwick
Mary Ann 35 b Bexhill
Thos David 11
Minnie Alberta 9
Kate Mills 8
Edith Ada 3 all b Worthing
Does the Mills bit come from George's family or is that a clue to Mary Ann's ancestry?

Hi

If that's the right one, there is a marriage for a Caleb Smith 4th quarter 1860 Battle Sussex 2b 61 and on the same page is an Eliza Mitten.

There is also a marriage for a Caleb Smith in 1864 2nd quarter Brighton 2b 378 and on the same page is a Susanna Abel.

Battle is nearer to Bexhill than Brighton.  :D

Well spotted.  The Battle one sounds good.    Need a child's birth certificate to confirm it though.  We can await Hokum50's comments.

If it is Eliza Mitten, the family are on the 1841 and 1851 census and there is someone on Ancestry who has them in their tree. Let me know if you don't have access to this and you want information.

Andrea/Jan
Thank you both very much for your "rapid response" to my query, it is much appreciated.
If I may, I'll answer all your points basically in the order you responded to:

1.  Ages on marriage cert GTB and MAS was "FULL" - not a lot of help was the rector of St Marks that day :(
2.  Parents were David BRAZIER Publican and Caleb SMITH Butcher.
3.  Witnesses were Caleb SMITH, James ? SMITH and Alice Wyborn.
4.  Most likely birth that I found for MAS was GRO: Sep 1865 Battle 2b/40 ???
5.  Have found no references to the death of GTB anywhere :'(  Sadly  grandparents are not around to ask, but they did live in GTB's house in Tower Road, Worthing for a short time when I was a kid!

Many thanks for the 1901 Census - it's spot on.  Kate Mills BRAZIER, by the way, got the Mills bit from her mother Kate MILLS (1844-1913) who married David BRAZIER (1840-1915) in Southwick :)

The 1871 Census for the SMITH family looks good too as it includes at least one of the witnesses at the GTB/MAS marriage :D

I agree, I'd rather cycle from Battle to Bexhill rather than to Brighton, so I agree your conclusion that the Caleb/Eliza MITTEN union the most likely

GTB's death is still a mystery but I'll keep beavering away at it.  Once again my indebted thanks to you both ;D

Regards
Ken
