Hi

I have been searching for the birth parents of my adopted great-grandmother, Alice Maude Gregory born between 1889 - 1890 in or near Pontypridd, Glamorgan.
There is a long thread about some of the story behind her family and possible birth parents here -
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,390641.0.htmlBasically, she was called Alice Maud Powell in 1891 census and listed as Mary and Robert Gregory's niece. Since then I have been going through all Mary Gregory's (nee Powell) siblings to see whose child she was.
I came to the conclusion that she was Harriett Powell's daughter - but after having GRO check the birth certificates for both the Alice M Powell's born between 1889 - 1890 in Pontypridd it turns out Harriett is not the mother of either of those children.
My other suspect is Mary Powell's other half sister - Maria Jane Evans who would have been about 19 - 20 in 1890.
Maria was born 1870 in Canton to parents Maria and Edward Evans.
Strangely she is on 1881 census twice - In one census she is living with the Greogry family
Robert Albert GREGORY 32 Cardiff, Glamorgan, Wales
Mary GREGORY 28 Merthyr, Glamorgan, Wales
Edward Richard EVANS Brother-In-Law 11 Cardiff, Glamorgan, Wales
Maria Jane EVANS Sister-In-Law 11 Cardiff, Glamorgan, Wales
Elizabeth COLLINS Sister-In-Law Married 22 Newport, Monmouth, England
Elizabeth Ann COLLINS Niece 6 Pontypridd, Glamorgan, Wales
Robert Henry COLLINS Nephew 2 Cardiff, Glamorgan, Wales
In the other census she is visiting her older half sister Amelia Powell in Llanwonno, Glamorgan.
I am trying to track down Maria in the 1891 census to see what happened to her and where she was living - but I haven't had much luck so far.
I almost wonder if she died because there is a death reg for a Maria Jane Evans in Cardiff, 1891 but it states her age as 27 so that doesn't really match with how she would have been.
If anyone might be able to find her in 1891 or know of what happened to her then I would really appreciate it.
I have been trying to find Alice Maud's real parents or just mother for such a long time ... it's like finding a needle in a haystack

Rebecca
