Hello Doug

Welcome to Rootschat ;D ;D

You won't be able to use the PM system until you have made 3 posts unfortunately.

You could post the photo on the thread - there are lots of experts here who might be able to give you all sorts of information. Your choice of course.

You could start a NEW THREAD on the WW1 armed forces board with the photo asking for help (and that would be one more post!)

As regards online records -I doubt you will find a complete list anywhere of members of the regiment - nice as it would be ;D

National Archives and Ancestry have WW1 medal cards online and SOME of the WW1 service papers. But it is very difficult to do a definitive search just under regiment rather than a name. It wouldn't really create a list though and would be rather hit and miss!

First step is to narrow down the date. If it is WW1 and you have potential names -  you would need to search under each of those names to see if you can find someone in the Middlesex Regt.

What you have here is a pic of one of the Regt water carts held by the 7th Middx.

The x4 chaps to the right are RAMC (Royal Army Medical Corps) medical orderlies and the chap to the left is an ASC (Army Service Corps) driver attached to the RAMC. Ergo the Geneva Cross brassard. They would be part of the Home Counties Territorial RAMC

I suspect that the pic was taken in Hornsey, where the Regt HQ was for this Territorial unit. The chap atop the cart has an "Imperial Service" badge on.

The driver would be from the Middx Brigade Company ASC
One more charge and then be dumb,

Many thanks for this.  Are we talking WW1 or WW2?

The Imperial Service badge was created in 1910 for members of the Territorial Force to volunteer for overseas service.

With no other dating evidence for this pic apart from the movements of the 7th bn:-

August 1914 : in Hornsey. Part of Middlesex Brigade in Home Counties Division. Moved on mobilisation to Isle of Grain.
September 1914 : left the Division and moved to Gibraltar, arriving 17 September.
February 1915 : returned to England. Moved to Barnet.
13 March 1915 : landed at Le Havre and two days later attached to 23rd Brigade in 8th Division.
Between 23 June and 2 August 1915, amalgamated with 1/8th Bn.
8 February 1916 : transferred to 167th Brigade in 56th (London) Division.

...I would have to put this pic as pre war...somewhere betwixt 1910 and 1914 before the move to the Isle Of Grain and thence Gib

Thanks very much.  I'm still at a loss as to which on my relatives is in the photo, but your information could prove very useful in working that out.

Hello!
I am looking for information about the Middlesex Regiment (1st Battalion) in respect to L/5109 Pte. Harry Mather who I am researching.  I have found his pension record and Medal Card on Ancestry. It appears he served initially from 1897 to 1909 and then from Jan 1914 to March 1920.  During his first engagement he was in the East Indies (1899 to 1905).  What area should I take that to mean?  And what were the Middlesex doing there at that time?  Unfortunately there are no details of where he served in France, though his medal card indicates he got the 1914 Star and Clasp and was there from 11th August 1914. This would make him one of the first British troops in France.  Where should I look for further information?
I should add that the Pension record gave a wealth of personal detail revealing his height, tattoos (a "Scotch" girl, a flower and a butterfly!!),  details of his marriage, and his father which I was unaware of.  If anyone finds such a record, it could be rewarding to examine it closely!
