Joseph Banister GODDEN
« on: Thursday 27 August 09 10:49 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

I'm having trouble tracing my Wiltshire ancestor Joseph Banister Godden. By age 15 he was living in Hastings, Sussex where he spent the rest of his life. I beleive he was born in Wiltshire, possibly Salisbury. I think his parents were Mark Godden and Elizabeth Banister. If anyone has any information on them or a baptism date for Joseph it would be greatly appreciated. I also don't know if Joseph had any brothers or sisters, if his parents died young or if they also moved to Hastings.

Cheers.
Eupham  :)

I'm sorry, I think he was born about 1826. By the 1841 census he was living in Hastings.

Cheers.

he died here

Deaths Sep 1904
GODDEN  Joseph Banister  79  Hastings  2b 22

aged 79 (or thereabouts remember its what the informant said) so that would make his y.o.b circa 1825

i was trying to find a mariage for him
then this would hopefully contain his fathers name unless he chose to omit it or was illegitimate

Hi Toni,

He married Mary Ann White in All Saints, Hastings on the 6th April 1850. His father is listed as Mark Godden.

There are a Number of family trees on ancestry that state the same parents that you have..

each one says he was born amesbury Wiltshire..

Looking at other christening/baptism records for GODDEN shows...

Edward Godden - 25 Jun 1820--Father = Mark Godden
Elizabeth Jane Godden 9th Jun 1822--Father = Mark Godden

also on the Criminal register..   Mark Brown (Godden) 6 months for Larceny in 1831 Wiltshire
LANCASHIRE = Wood,Howard,,Smethurst,Foxall,Cheetham,Brookes,Grime, Horrocks,Thornley,Arstall,Shawcross,Rowland,Mclean LINCOLNSHIRE = Featherstone Johnson,Toyne,Willson,

Hi Woody,

Were Edward and Elizabeth baptised in Amesbury? I hope that turns out to be my Mark with the Larceny. Will make a nice skeleton in the closet.  :)

just looking at the census 1891 shown as b. Sailsbury
1881 Sailsbury
1871 Trowbridge
1851 not known wiltshire - would indicate he didnt know where he was born but knew wiltshire or thathe didnt give the enumartor the info and the person who did just knew he was from Wiltshire

added 1861 is givenOre Sussex for some reason
