hunter old machar
« on: Wednesday 23 September 09 04:24 BST (UK) »
I have a George Hunter c 17/12/1821 Old Machar who married Catherine Shearer 12/9/1845 St Nicholas. Catherine c @ 1824 her father was James Shearer on her marriage certificate. Cannot find her birth on any indexes. It could be her mother was Agnes McKenzie/Shearer but that is just an assumption as I found her on 1851 census at Sugar House Lane St Clements. There was a marriage of James Shearer and Agnes McKenzie 11/2/1819 Aberdeen on Scotslands People. They emigrated to Australia 1854. Would anyone have any further leads on this family?  Thanks   Corinna

Hi,in the 1851 census you mentioned,Agnes states she is an aunt to the head of the household.I think I have found Catherine & her parents in the 1841 census. There is a couple in Bannermill Street, St.Clements, Aberdeen, John & Mary Sherar & their daughter Cathrine aged 13.All born outwith the census county,John is a blacksmith. I think it is probably the enumerator who has spelled the names phonetically! As Catherine married before registration records began, are you sure her father's name was James. What was the source of your information? Was it George & Catherine Hunter who emigrated to Australia,or James & Agnes Shearer?

Many thanks for your reply. Catherines father is stated as James on her marriage record that I got through Scotlands People. He was staed as a  late seaman of Aberdeen in 1845. Witnesses were Peter Hunter and John Shearer. Catherine and George Hunter emigrated to Australia on Ellon Castle in 1854, with children George c 1840,James 1850,Peter 1846 William 1851, all born Old Machar. Un fortunately Catherines death certficate lists her parents as unknown.

I've just remembered, the 1841 census does n't state the relationships in the households. Therefore it is likely that Catherine was living with relatives other than her parents!

Thanks for your information . I will try to work this all out.Catherine may have been living with relatives and maybe John was her brother,as there was a John Shearer as her marriage witness.  Regards
