« on: Monday 19 October 09 21:13 BST (UK) »
I am looking for any information off the scottish 1861 census. I think he was 10 or 11 years old  in 1861. His mother was Agnes Smith I don't know the father's name.. Agnes was born in 1820/21. She had a son called William ( I think) and another son called Samuekl who was 16 0r 17 years old in 1861. Can anybody help..

Hi Andy

Welcome to Rootschat   ;D

Draper being the occupation - not another surname he was known as......

This is the family in 1881, which I guess you already have?

1881: 51 Frederick St  - Bishop Wearmouth, Sunderland
RG11 /  Piece: 4998 / Folio: 50 / Page: 30
Head: Robert J SMITH 30, Draper, b Scotland
Wife: Annie SMITH 30, b Durham
Son: Henry SMITH 1, b Bishop Wearmouth Durham
Son: Robert J SMITH 5 mths, b Bishop Wearmouth Durham
Mother: Agnes SMITH 60, married, b Scotland
Brother: Samuel SMITH 26, unm, Draper, b Scotland

Note: Samuel is not 36 in this Census - he's written down 26 - born abt 1854/55

Robert J SMITH  & his wife Annie F SMITH & children are still in Bishop Wearmouth 1891.

MARRIAGE : Sunderland Jun Qtr 1879, 10a pg 593
Robert John SMITH & Ann Frances DAVIDSON on same page

By 1901, Annie is a widow with her children, in Durham.

DEATH: Robert J SMITH age 48
Sunderland Mar Qtr 1898 - 10a - pg311

Is there a particular reason you've posted this topic in the Aberdeen board - ie: do you have some indications the family was from Aberdeen?

Cheers

I've searched and searched - but can't find a lead at all. Looking 1851, 1861, 1871 England and Scotland
(Of course, we are looking for common fornames & SMITH!)

There is also no telling if they are still in Scotland 1861.
By 1871 at age abt 20, if RJ was a Draper as in tailoring he might be in Apprenticeship anywhere. If he was a Draper as in shop, he might be down as a Grocer, merchant, etc etc.

I'm thinking Robert John's marriage certificate to acertain the name & occupation of his father, might have to be the next step?

Hi Andy and Ambly

I had a look earlier. The only family I could find were nowhere near Aberdeenshire but in Dumfriesshire. There is this submitted entry on IGI:

Robert John Smith Birth: 06 AUG 1849  Broomhills, Applegarth, Dumfries - Parents James Smith and Agnes Scott.

This looks like this family in 1861 - big family!:

James Smith 42, Farmer Of 95 Ac (empl 6 Lab), b. Kirkmahoe Dumfrieshire
Agnes Smith 42, b. Wilton, Roxburghshire
Elisabeth Smith 18
William Smith 17
Jean Smith 16
Mary Smith 14
Robert Smith 11 b. Applegarth
James Smith 9
Samuel Smith 8
Thomas Smith 6
Helen Smith 5
Agnes Smith 2
David Smith 6 Months
George Smith 16, servant

Address: Broomhills, Applegarth

Mother Agnes' age fits, as does Robert's (who shows as Robert John on his submitted IGI entry) and there is a brother Samuel in the right age range.

I think you are going to have to obtain Robert's marriage cert, as suggested by Ambly, to confirm his  his father's name at least.

Monica

I have found the father of James Smith. His dad is Joseph and his mother is Janet Anderson. I have a Baptised Certificate 1818 March 5th but what is my next option to trace the father Joseph in Scotland.
