Vandepeers from Sheerness
« on: Tuesday 10 November 09 05:32 GMT (UK) »
We are looking for birth/family records for William James Vandepeer born about 1830 at Sheerness, son of William James Vandepeer and Christianna Munns, birtdates unknown.
William James II married Susan Bryson 11th May 1854 at Minster, and they emigrated to South Australia on the Lord of the Isles that same year. We can find no details for Susan Bryson.
There are many Vandepeers BMD at Sheerness, but no apparent connection between the many Thomas and Edwards and William James.
Can anyone help us make the correct connections?

I don't know, but it might help sort out some earlier Vandepeers - have you seen the PCC Will of Mary Vandepeer, Widow of Reculver , Kent Date 06 February 1806 PROB 11/1439? You can search for it here:

Thanks Carole for the lead on wills, it is my belief that the Reculver Vandepeers were a separate branch from the Sheerness families, however I am trying to find the link.
In the 1700's and early 1800's marriages were usually restricted to just a few miles within a village, and the distance between Reculver and Sheerness was considerable for regular contacts.

But any input showing the links will be appreciated.

It still may be worth a shot - people did move around in the C17th & C18th and it's an unusual name. Sometimes you can hit the jackpot with a will if extended family members  are mentioned.

Re:  Susan Bryson

Susan Bryson was the daughter of John Bryson, Pork Butcher of Canterbury, Kent.
Please see here on my site.  The information is from a member of the Vandepeer family.

William James Vandepeer, son of Thomas and Christian Vandepeer (25 Broad Street Sheerness, Kent) married Susan Bryson, daughter of John and Elizabeth (Hinge) of Northgate Street, Canterbury on 11/5/1854.   They traveled to Adelaide aboard the Lord of the Isles, landing in December that year.   They settled in Adelaide where they had 8 surviving children.   William worked as a carpenter, often for the Register Newspaper.   They lived for much of the time in Grenfell Street in Adelaide.   In 1878 William took up about 600 acres farming land at Petersville, a few kilometres North West of Ardrossan, on the Yorke Peninsula - about 160 Km from Adelaide by road.   The family relocated in 1883.   William died in 1904 and Susan in 1919, both on the farm at Petersville.   Susan contributed to the Register on many occasions.  Many of the family were accomplished singers, and it seems likely that she was influential in this pursuit, although William was also a noted singer.   Susan claimed to have attended a girls' school in Canterbury, and it has been suggested that it might have been the Blue Girls School.   (Any information about that would be greatly appreciated.)   There are many descendants of William and Susan in Australia.
William was a joiner in the ship building industry at Sheerness.   The family can be traced back as far as 1527 in Kent: many in the ship building business.

I've just been looking at the baptismal registers of St Nicholas Rochester and found Mary Jane d/o John and Margaret Vandepeer born 26 August and baptised 19 September 1773. There may be more but I just saw this one by chance and the name rang a bell.

The nearest baptism I can see at http://www.familysearch.org (select Record Search Pilot) for William is that of William VANDEPIER non-conformist (born 21 Dec 1825) Sheerness son of Thomas and Christian - have further noted that marriage entry for him lists just William not William James.
