Missing Parents
« on: Monday 30 November 09 21:27 GMT (UK) »
I hope someone can help to solve my mystery.  In 1891 I have Sidney Johnson (born Halesworth Suffolk) in Ilford with his brother William.  His wife, Martha Johnson (also born Halesworth, Suffolk), is at a different address in Ilford with son George Johnson and grandchildren Harry, Cissy and Emily Wenham.

Sidney & Martha had a daughter Margaret who married William Wenham.  I can't find either of them in the 1891 census.  Could they both have died, leaving 3 children under 10?  What an awful thought.

Does anyone have any ideas please?

Possible birth of "Emily" WENHAM perhaps occasioning her mother's death in the same registration quarter?

Birth Sep qtr 1888

Florence Emily WENHAM

Croydon 2a 235

Ignore the above - the 1891 census shows she's the daughter of a James and Emily WENHAM in Croydon.

Hi Anna

I'm guessing that Ada Cecilia became the Cissy that I have in 1891.  The children were born in 1881, 1882 and 1885.

The death of Margaret could be correct, I don't think it is that common a surname, but I'm sure someone will advise me otherwise!

I wonder what happened to William.

[s :)ize=14pt][/size]  Cecilia Ada Wenham is my paternal grandmother.  She was married to Francis Stone Hartland and they had three children, Francis Edward, Emily Sarah and Thomas Henry who was my father.    I know that my great grandmother died at a very young age and also my great grandfather died at aged 45 years.   I am not sure about Cecilia's siblings because she never talked about any other family members.  Perhaps they were cared for by other family members as mentioned in the post by linnet27 30 November 2009.  The family immigrated to Australia and lived in Melbourne.     I have only just read the post and am quite excited to know there could be other family members around.

I haven't been able to find the death of William either, but these may be of interest:

The parish copy of the marriage of William Henry Wenham and Margaret Johnson is available on ancestry.

Their daughter Emily is Emily MARGARET born Jan qtr 1885 West Ham. She married Sep qtr 1907 in West Ham, 4a 452, her husband is William James Wilkinson, Charles Francis M Pierson or Charles Francis M Self.

Not had much time for research due to work and arrival of grandchildren!

Hi Seniorozzie! This is my husband's family and the connection to you is Margaret Johnson (1857-1888).  Her brother George Sidney (1860 - 1935) is his great grandfather.

clairec666, thanks for the link.  It confirms what I had!

Hi linnet27, thanks for your reply - that is quite amazing.  Was it George Sidney's family who cared for the young children after Margaret's death.  My Dad always said we were related to Amy Johnson the aviatrix but so far I haven't been able to find the connection or how to get started on it. Do you know anything of this ?    Congratulations on your children they are great to have and enjoy.     Is the photo on your info the great grandfather of Margaret ?
Cheers
Julie
