With such loss of life I would expect this sinking to have been reported in national papers such as the Times and the Scotsman, both of which have searchable online archives.
The Stornoway Historical Society might be able to help, and there is a link on their website to the Barvas and Brue Historical Society.

Not sure about the reporting, Isabel. There were so many drownings/sinkings. Sadly, it was (and is) a way of life with fishermen
It might have been reported in the
North Star
. I've managed to get quite a few reports from there in the past via the Inverness Library.

Or the
Stornoway Gazette
but not sure how long that paper's been in existence

I have had a quick look at the Scotsman, which shows a headline but you have to subscribe to get into any article.
Did notice 2 headlines: 6th Mar 1885 - Three Fishing Boats Lost and 16th Mar 1885 - Sad Boating Disaster
Is anyone a subscriber

Hi Brian
I don't have an Athens pass anymore. However, if all else fails, The Scotsman do have 24 hour passes for around £7 that you might purchase.
The date of the accident was 4th March.
Regards
