Help me to find Sarah, please....
« on: Thursday 21 January 10 23:16 GMT (UK) »
I have lost Sarah Alice Morse.

Born 1876, South Bank/Middlesbrough, daughter of Henry Morse and Margaret Smith.

1881, she is with her grandparents, William and Sarah Smith in Exelby and Leeming, Yorkshire

1891, she is still with her grandparents, listed as Alice.

(I have no idea what happened to her parents)

1906, she married David Hay in Great Ouseburn ( spans North and West Ridings )

1911, she is with her husband and a child, in Middlesbrough.

I can't find her in 1901 and would appreciate anyone with sharper eyes than mine having a look for her.

This is part of my attempt to find the death records of the above mentioned grandparents, who were also my 2 x great grandparents. With their names being just a bit on the common side, I am trying to find any clues which might help to narrow down the choices. There are no obvious candidates in Leeming. If I can place Sarah Alice Morse in 1901, it just might give me a pointer in the right direction.

Every now and then I feel an urge to track down some of my hundreds of Smiths. It won't last! ::)

Thanks in anticipation...

Jen

Hi

This is a complete longshot as I can't find her under Morse

There is an entry for Sara Preece aged 26 servant b South Bank Yorks.  Above her on the image is an Annie Preece aged 32 b St Martin Hereford.  The enumerator has dittoed Sara's surname as Preece

The chances of Sara and Annie being sisters born in such different counties may be improbable but I did say it's a longshot!!

RG13 Piece 2712 Folio 5 Page 1

I've checked the 1881 and there is an Ann Eliza Preece b St Martins 1871 but no sister Sara.

I have also checked the 1881 for all Ann/Annie Preece's b Hereford in the age range and none had a sister Sara

My Margaret Smith, born 1858, married Henry Morse in 1875. In 1871, her family was in Tees Tilery but by 1881, her parents were back in Exelby, with her daughter, Sarah Alice.

If Henry Morse died between 1875 and 1879, this could indeed be my Margaret marrying William Lynn. Sadly, I can't find a death for him yet.

I definitely think this deserves some investigation - maybe next month's certificate order could include the marriage of Margaret Morse and William Lynn.

I'm off to check later censuses for more clues.

Thanks, Osprey :)

Hi there gen, thought you might like to know that my maternal grandmother's maiden name was Smith.... ::)  and she lived in London - what a combination.  Have yet to start on her family - needless to say I keep putting it off.

Hi Jen,

You can't imagine how surprised I was to come across your post while researching my 2nd great grandfather William Lynn (1849-1923).  So surprised I had to sign up and respond to your post.  Sorry if it's lengthy.

I know exactly who your Sarah is.

Mary Lynn formerly Morse nee Smith (1858-1930) is my 2nd great grandmother; Mary & William were married 08 Sep 1879 in Richmond, Yorkshire, England in the Register Office in the District of Richmond; son Arthur William Lynn was born 3 months later 09 Dec 1879.  This was a second marriage for both of them.

Mary Smith's first marriage was to Henry John Morse on 26 Oct 1875 in Stockton, Durham/Yorkshire, England in the Register Office in the District of Stockton; daughter Sarah Alice Morse was born 6 months later 28 Apr 1876.

William Lynn died 17 Jul 1923 in Great Ouseburn, Yorkshire, England; his wife Mary Lynn formerly Morse nee Smith died 08 Apr 1930 in Great Ouseburn, Yorkshire, England.

Henry John Morse was born 1854 Q3 in Northleach, Gloucestershire, England (Volume 6a, Page   311) to parents Charles and Sarah Morse.  The only possible death record I have been able to find is:
Henry Morse
Estimated Birth Year:   abt 1857
Registration Year:   1878
Registration Quarter:   Jan-Feb-Mar
Age at Death:   21
Registration district:   Northampton
Inferred County:   Northamptonshire
Volume:   3b
Page:   58
although, I have no idea if this is the right one for Henry or not (Henry is not a direct ancestor of mine).

Sarah Alice Morse born 28 Apr 1876 in South Bank, Middlesbrough, Yorkshire, England (South Bank used to be known as Tees Tilery); 1901 Census:  Domestic Maid, 45 Beaufort Gardens - Parish of Kensington, Ecclesiastical District of Holy Trinity - lived with & employed by Joseph H. Laye; Marriage to David Hay:  15 Dec 1906 in Great Ouseburn, Yorkshire, England; Death:  22 Jul 1959 in Middlesbrough, Yorkshire, England.

I have more information regarding William Lynn & Mary Smith and their parents.  I also have more information on Sarah Alice Morse, her husband David Hay, and their son.

Hope this info helps.  Also, I'm very curious as to how you & I are related since we share the same 2nd great grandparents.  Looking forward to hearing from you.  Hopefully we can exchange information with a view to confirm our family trees.  Happy searching.

All the best,
Lynn

Hello and Welcome to Rootschat!

This is not the first time I have been contacted by someone who just happened to find one of my posts in here, so it is obviously a really useful place - as well as being one of the best and most friendly of all the genealogy websites!

I am delighted with all your information and will add it to my tree just as soon as I have time. I shall also get back to you with details of my family link to yours. Don't panic if it's not within the next few days - I'm a bit busy at the moment.

Cheers,

Jen :)

Hi Lynn,
I was surprised to receive an email from Rootschat with a link to your post. William and Margaret Lynn were also my great grandparents! I have information regarding the family and I'd like to find out more. Florence Margaret Lynn, one of their daughters, was my grandmother. I also have Ernest Lynn's World War 1 medals. I am curious as to how we are related so would love to speak with you via private message.

Best wishes, Debbie
