Mary Marvel
« on: Monday 15 March 10 21:56 GMT (UK) »
Would anybody have any advice on how I could find info on Mary Marvel and Fletcher Hill who married at St Mary's Radcliffe in July 1837.
I tried to get  marriage certificate from Bury Registrar's but was told that because of the early date they had very little info apart from the basics that I have quoted. I was told that registration became compulsory in 1837 and the vicar had not completed the record completely. Mary was a direct ancestor of mine and was born in 1811 in Skipton.  I would particularly like to know if Mary's father was called Joseph. I am very new to RootsChat and hope I have done this post correctly.  Any advice would be very welcome.

Hi

They married after Civil Registration - 30.7.1837 so entry should have shown their respective fathers names.  Is this what the registrar is saying is missing?

Hi,

The marriage is recorded in the Birth records (See Free BMD) as follows-

September Quarter 1837
District - Bury
Reference  - Vol 21 Page140

You can order the certificate from the General Registration Office

Hiya Morvelle..and welcome to Rootschat..you probably know this ,but just in case, the marriage is on www.familysearch.org
30th July 1837
......No matching  birth/christening for Mary Marvel...

.ONE possible for Fletcher

Fletcher Hill christened 2nd December 1810 Prescot,Lancashire ...parents Joseph and Elizabeth.......

there are 3 christenings for Mary Marvel 1809-1813 but not 1811 in Skipton

for the record go to www.lancashirebmd.org.uk and you will see Fletcher and Mary`s marriage IS recorded there ...with it being 30th July 1837 I would have thought that Mary`s father WOULD be recorded
Fletcher Hill  Mary Marvel   Radcliffe St Marys    reg at Bury   CE22/1/5
allan ;)
oakes,liverpool..neston..backford..poulton cum spittal(bebington)middlewich,cheshire......   sacht,helgoland  .......merrick,herefordshire adams,shropshire...tipping..ellis..  jones,garston,liverpool..hartley.dunham massey..barker. salford

Thankyou very much for the help...
I think that my Mary is recorded as Mary Morville on the IGI..her birth given in Skipton on 17th Dec 1811 and Christening on 2nd Feb, both in Skipton. The Morvelle name is sometimes given as Marvel, Morvel, Morvill etc. his sometimes makes it easy & sometimes harder to track them.  I'm "hoping" that Mary's father was Joseph Morvell, my ggg grandfather, which would make her my gg grandfather's sister.  This would help explain a few details on my tree.
The Bury registrar had no info on Mary's or Fletcher's fathers or their occupations.  I believe their info was coming from the St Mary's parish register.  Does this mean that there might be more info on the marriage certificate if I ordered one directly from the Lancs record office?

I tried to look at the parish records but after June 1837 for that year they were completely illegible.
