There's a very interesting one on the 1881 in Cheshire:

RG11/3490/93/48

Aged 35, born Scotland, commercial traveller, pharaceuticals. Mother in law is a Margaret Little, aged 77, b. Scotland

Other info from pedigree resource file (LDS) states that he died in 1892 - would that fit. Name is Charles Andrew Johnstone on this source. I think there is also a submitted entry showing him being baptised Annan Nov 25 1835. Parents John Johnston and Mary Burnie

Hi Gadget,

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,396794.0.html

This was the thread you helped me with before - and we found the guy we were looking for!

Still trawling round the Scotland sites for more info - can't see the births deaths and marriages though which is a bit hampering.  Through Ancestry we can only see census activity.

As with everyone, going for the certificates without having a reasonable idea that the person will be the correct one is an expensive activity not to be undertaken lightly.

Wiggy

Edit to add    Also think you are right about Mary's birth year being 1826 and marriage year being 1846 - incidentally  that squares with age at immigration - not with age at death - but people can be wrong - at her death there was someone not family giving information.

From the other thread:

Quote from: wiggy
It was about a C.A. Johnstone, son of George Johnstone of Dinwoodie and Holmains who was working in Manchester with a firm of druggists and chemists.   I am thinking George may have been the brother of David, our Mary's father.

So, given that the testimonial says that he was working for a firm of druggists, the 1881 that I found looks like the correct person:

Did you chase up the George/David connection?

In 1891, he's still in Cheshire as Chas Andrew Johnstone, aged 56, pharmaceutical chemist, born Scotland:

RG12/ 2811/74/24

and in 1901, same description:

RG13/3308/16/23

I think the family are in Applegarth on the 1841:

Dinnwoodie Mains, Applegarth

Parish - 813a, ED 3 Page 10

It's a strange collection but there is a Mary Johnstone, aged 15; a David ,aged 18; a George, age 24 and a Charles, aged 6 - all fit.

The oldest female is Elizabeth, aged 48, who could be George, David and Mary's mother.

Can you follow them up on the 1851?

Oooooooooops  :-[ - it's the same one that you found  but I'm sure it's them!

PS - also have a looka at Annan 812 ED 3 Page 14 - Charles Johnstone, aged 10

Have been going through the Johnstones  - 1851 census- can't find anyone to correspond with Mary the mother until about page 5 on the Ancestry boards - finally found one which might match -
1851  - Parish 578
b 1801  Ayr
Age 50 -  Ag Lab Widow
182 High St Closs
Ed2 P26 House 123
Roll CSSCT 1851

Can't find any of the other children and I keep getting confused about the mother and the daughter - but by 1851 Mary the daughter would have been Mary Brown. Could they be living with an aunt maybe?  (that 1841 set up does look like the right family - but the parents don't seem to be there - so maybe this Mary isn't right either - very odd)

Re Annan 812 Ed3 p14
Don't know about this Charles   - not if he is brother to the 1841 lot - wrong age and people about him.  But if he is the cousin maybe - can't think straight - will lie down to cogitate - I work well that way!!

 Hmmm
It is very late/early so will continue tomorrow trying to chase some of the other children from the Applegarth set up.

Hi Wiggy

Have another look at the 1841 family:

Dinnwoodie Mains, Applegarth (ref as before)

Johnstone
George, 24, farmer
Elisabeth, 48
David, 18
James, 17
Mary, 15
Agnes, 14
John, 13
George, 11
Robert, 9
William, 9
Francis, 7
Charles, 6

All born Dumfriesshire

and in 1851, this looks like your Charles A Johnstone and (brother) Robert:

Lodge Wynd, Annan
812 ED 3 Page 20

Margaret Rule, 37, shopkeeper, b. Annan
Robert Johnston, lodger, 19, writer- clerk, b. Applegarth
Charles A Johnston,lodger,  15, Druggist (apprentice), B. Applegarth

I think you should really study the 1841 family closely!

To check who Charles A Johnstone's father was, there is this marriage registration:

March q, 1866, Chorlton vol 8c page 638

Charles A Johnstone and Charlotte C Little are on the same page
