Lankfer/Sharp- Marriage !!!
« on: Monday 22 March 10 00:43 GMT (UK) »
Hello

I may be in the wrong County but I was wondering if SKS could have a look for a Marriage between John Lankfer and Martha Sharp.. I 'm pretty sure it would be after 1826 and before 1851.

I have the 1851 UK Census and John & Martha were living @ 79 High Road Wisbeck... Martha Sharp is my Great Aunt and she was Baptised 29 January 1808 @ South Kyme Lincolnshire.... I always thought that a Marriage was usually held in the Bride's Village...however I stand to be corrected here..

I have a CD of Lincolnshire Marriage Index 1700-1837 for the Deaneries with cover the South Kyme Area & surrounds... but there is no marriage listed..& I've searched the IGI records to no avail.

I would appreciate any advice of where to look for their marriage and apologise if I'm in the wrong County List...

Sincerely.
Faysie

There is a probable marriage between John Lankfer and a Martha Lake in Wisbech, Sep.Quarter 1849, Volume 14, Page 207.
I expect that this was a second marriage for Martha Sharp, having previously married a Lake. A copy of the certificate will confirm if this is correct as it should give Martha Lake's father's name as Sharp.
I cannot see any Marriage for Martha Sharp to a Lake after 1837 when central registration began, neither can I see any Martha Lake of an appropriate age in Lincolnshire or Cambridgeshire in 1841, however there are a couple of possibles in nearby areas of Norfolk. In Purfleet Street near Kings Lynn there is a William and Martha Lake both age 25, with children Jane 5 and Marian 3. In Attleborough there is a George 28 and Martha 30 with a John Lake 2 and Rebecca Bussey 11.
In the case of the second Martha, there is a marriage of George Lake and Martha Bussey in Wayland District in 1838, so if this is Martha Sharp she must have had 3 marriages. The first family can be eliminated as I can see them together in 1851.
Marriages usually took place in the home village of the bride, not always and this may not be the same parish as her baptism, if her parents moved during her childhood.

Hi Faysie,

All I can add is that the 1849 marriage of John Lankfer was at Wisbech St. Mary according to Cambs Index.

I now think that neither of the Martha Lake that I found on the 1841 could be your Martha Sharp. I found a George Lake in 1851 with a 12 year old son John in Attleborough and a different wife. There was a death of a Martha Lake in 1844 in the Wayland District.
I therefore cannot see any sign of the Martha that married John Lankfer in 1849 in the 1841 census. I could also not positively identify Martha's mother Mary Sharp in 1841, have you found her?

Dear Geoff, Selina & Robesur.

Thank you all so much for your input to my dilemma. I appreciate everything that you have given to me... I tend to agree with Geoff and only a Marriage Cert will either prove or disprove the following information that I have researched...to me this all ties in with what I have already..

1.        1809.        Martha was Bapt 29 Jan 1809 @ South Kyme. Lincs.

1A.      1826        Martha was a Witness at the Marriage of my GGrandparents. Edward Sharp & Susannah Plowright in Pinchbeck & signed the Register.

2,        1841         UK Census- Martha living @ Pelham with parents John & Mary- Martha not married.

3,        1846         29 June 1846 Martha Married William Lake ( son of William) @ Holland Fen. (Source Lincs Marriages 1837 Boston-1837-1850 ).what a surprise!

4.        1847         William Lake husband of Martha Sharp died Sept 1847 @ Wisbeck ( Source UK Free BMD Vol 14. page 96.)

5.        1849         Martha Lake (nee Sharp/e) Married John Lankfer - Sept 1849 Wisbeck. ( Source: UK Free BMD- Vol 14 page 330 )( 2nd Marriage for Martha )

6.        1851         John & Martha Lankfer living @ 79 High Road. Wisbeck. Cambridgeshire. ( Source: 1851UK Census. HO 107/1766-Folio 200/Page 24

7.        1861         Can't find Martha or John..???? ( checked Census- must be looking in wrong place) am probably tired.. LOL..

8.        1871         Martha  is a Housekeeper for Joseph Ward @ (13 Five Million ?? South Kyme. Lincs- can't quite read the Census properly ) she is a Widow.( Source: 1871 UK Census
                           RG10/3352- Folio 5- page 3.

9.        1881         Martha aged 72years is a Visitor  her brother Thomas and Clara Sharp/e's house  Number 6 North 40Ft. Side. South Kyme. Lincs.( Source:
 10.        1881 UK Census RG11/3220- Folio 126- Page 2..........Interesting to note Martha is a Visitor with Caroline Bagenell aged 63 years.. both women are  listed as " Annuitants"...I checked Wikipedia  & found this means " An Individual who receives Benefits from an Annuity"... Hmmmm!!! she must have  come into some money.

10.      1886         Martha Lankfer ( nee Sharp/e ) died Circa November 1886 and was buried  on 25 November 1886 @ All Saints Church. Holland Fen.(Source:
National Burial Index 2nd Edition. checked by the Anglican Parish Register.@ Lincolnshire Family History Society.

Again my sincere appreciation for your kindness..

Regards
