George Fathers - lookups please
« on: Friday 02 April 10 20:50 BST (UK) »
Hi

Got the marriage certificate of my gt grandfather George when he married Maria Alcock. They got married at the parish church, Kings Sutton so I assumed he lived there. However his father's name on the certificate is also shown as George and occupation mason. I have looked at the census and found a George Fathers - occupation stone mason married to Martha with a son (poss my gt grandfather) living in parish of Souldern. The census says
George Fathers 1803 - born Upper Hayford
George Fathers 1830 - Born Souldern.

Any information would be gratefully received.

Thanks

This is a duplicate request is it not?
Keep it in one place (Northants) or you will get muddled.

The George FATHERS born in Souldern doesn't appear to be the one you want anyway.  Here he is in the 1861 census:

Ref: RG9/898 Folio 82 Schedule 15 - Turnpike Road, Souldern, Oxfordshire

George FATHERS, Head, Mar, 30, Stone Mason, born Souldern, Oxon
Sarah FATHERS, Wife, Mar, 31, born Souldern, Oxon
James FOX, Son-in-law (i.e.stepson), 6, Scholar, born Souldern, Oxon
Sarah FINCH, Mother in law, Widow, 68, Visitor Pauper, born Toddingham, Gloucestershire

Quartermain and variants - Oxfordshire
Wiggins - Oxfordshire
Lowe - Charney Bassett, Berkshire
Bettle - Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire
Marshall - Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire
Goodman - Buckinghamshire

a red herring unfortunately then that one. he really does seem elusive.

As i said though his father George's occupation is shown as mason on the marriage certificate...

Is this George the one living in Leamington in 1881?  If so he says he was born in Kings Sutton. RG11; Piece: 3092; Folio: 87; Page: 13;
There is a submitted entry on IGI for his baptism so it looks like the submitter couldn't find it.
Have you asked on the Northants board for a baptism lookup?

1851 He is in Birmingham a pork butcher in a bacon factory. He is transcribed as Father but he still says born Kings Sutton.

Yes it is the George shown in Leamington on 1881. Occupation shown as gardner.

Not sure it is the pork butcher one in birmingham as this does not tally with anything else I have.

Thanks for looking though. I did list on the northants board too as wasnt sure which county kings sutton fell in.

Well I think it's unlikely there were 2 George Fathers born in Kings Sutton at that time so he could have given up pork butchery perhaps  before his marriage. What was his occupation on his marriage cert.?
