COMPLETED Ages possible date and colour please
« on: Sunday 11 April 10 08:35 BST (UK) »
Hope I'm not being too greedy here, but I had some time to spare and thought I would upload these two photos. ;)

If anyone would like to guess at ages. In 1881 the man would have been 50, his wife 47 and the older lady 81 (if she's who I think she is). Thoughts on whether or not the older lady might be mother of the man. I'm thinking the photo might be taken early 1880's. I realize it will be hard to date, but would appreciate a guess.

My cousin sent me some photos and he said some had been digitally enhanced because they were so faded. I think these 2 might be. The photo was taken in Scotland. The older woman died in 1885. If anyone would like to colour (especially the first one) that would be great. Thanks

Lois

What absolutely charming photos.  I can imagine the photographer saying "I'll take one from a distance to show you there's nothing to worry about".  You can see the subjects peering towards the camera, one shading her eyes from the sun.  Nice dog too!

Hi Greensleeves

I love them :) You can image how excited I was to open the letter with the photos in it. I know it is my great grandparents, and hoping the other is Gt Gt grandmother.

It's nice to know my ancestors also liked animals. I notice both have there hand on the dog.

Thanks oldtimer, wasn't too sure about the roof of the lean-to, looks like feather board. The cottage looks like one I was evacuated to in North Devon in 1940, I loved it and the people so much I stayed for eight years.  :-\

Hello Lois
Older women are quite hard to date as they didn't keep up with fashion, but the woman in the middle of this is dressed 1880's but probably dressed this way for the rest of her days.
The 2nd. photo which has a different group of women is more dateable at around late 1880's-early 1890's.

Wow Bill! A super colouring!!

Hi Bill, what more can I say, I think Oldtimer said it beautifully :) Thanks so much.

Jim, I had thought the photos was taken the same day with just another woman and some children who were probably family members. You have made me look at this differently now and that's always a good thing. Thanks

Lois
