++ COMPLETED ++ McLEOD - Lochbroom
« on: Sunday 25 April 10 08:20 BST (UK) »
Hi
I am looking for information on an Annabella McLeod born Loch Broom Ullapool 5/12/1842
I know she came to New Zealand in 1877 but it is her family in Scotland I am seeking.   If you stumble on any information I would be thankful.
regards

Hi  :)

Are you mixing Lochs and Lochbroom. I see the IGI has the birth of an Annabella Macleod on 5 Dec 1842 and bpt. 10 July 1843. Parents - Roderick Macleod and Mary Macleod.

Lochs is a parish on the Isle of Lewis while Lochbroom is a mainland parish centred on Ullapool

Re: Annabell McLeod 1842/43
I dont know what I did but your reply dissappeared off  my screen -I got to the part where IGI had a listing with father Roderick McLeod and the birthdate ----
I believe she is the sister of William below but dont know where they link up

The map I have has been highlighted in green Loch Broom Ullapool

I am also looking for  my G Grandfather William McLeod parents he was a shepherd born 1844 d 1928 married to Jessie Flora McDonald b... d1884 -after her death took his 5 sons to New Zealand one being my grandfatherhelp
houston
Thanks for your

I'll see if I can unravel things for you but the only Annabella M*cleod that I can  see born 5th Dec 1842 was born Lochs, Isle of Lewis.

Who marked Lochbroom in green - was it much later than the trip to NZ?

Hi again

On the 1851 census there is a possible Annabell and brother William in Ardmair (just around the corner from Ullapool):

Ardmair, Ullapool, Lochbroom

McLeod
John, 50, lotter
Flora, 46
Neil, 11
Anabell, 9
William, 6

All born Ardmair

Hi

I think she's in Coigach - Badenscallie - on the 1861 as a servant. Badenscallie is only about a mile from my old home.  Unfortunately, there are so many Mcleods that it takes a while to unravel. She might be related to some friends of mine. I'll have to investigate further.

I assume she married before going to New Zealand - can you give me the details, please?

Found you again.
I need to step back a bit
I have just uncovered a marriage cert that gives me Wlliams details:  He was born 23/12/1884 Ross shire Scotland.
I need to search then for the parents details.
His Father:
John McLeod Farmer and Mother Flora McLeod.
he has her maiden name as McLeod also

I was sent the map in 1993 from a cousin of my fathers with the following details of Annabella McLeod born 1842/43 Scotland at Ullapool, Loch Broom, 1842/43 Came to NZ from Inverness 1877, disembarked at Dunedin working as a domestic servant and then married a George Milne.  She was described "as a big well preserved strong woman, who came from well up in the Western Highlandsof Scotland"

Regarding William
After his 1st wife died in Scotland he and his 5 sons came to NZ. and William remarried out here to a Jessie Cummings nee Forrest originally from Lanarkshire Scotland who we believe came from Aust. where she was a Domestic Servant and they may have met on the ship but I dont know what ship they came out on?
I wonder if the Roderick you mentioned and John are brothers ????    Could that be the connection - making William and her cousins.  This is what I need to fathom. first.
Cheers houston
