George Brind - birth Channel Islands?
« on: Tuesday 18 May 10 22:18 BST (UK) »
Hi

I need some help with George Brind please.

This is what I know of him so far:

He married Maria Ostler of East Coker, Somerset in 1874 at St Mary's church, Reading, Berkshire. On the marriage certificate his father was named as Thomas Brind, a book-keeper.

I have found him in the different censuses with Maria and various children after 1881 when he was in Reading at St Giles (RG11 / 1309 ).

After some help we found him in 1871 in Reading (RG10 / 1283) where he was a lodger.

Now here's the problem - I have searched and search for his birth but no luck - he says on the censuses he was born in the Channel Islands - he migrates between Jersey and Guernsey but I can find nothing for him on the Channel Islands and I can't find any "Brind" on the Islands at all.

The census have birth dates between 1852 and 1855 and the marriage certificate says he was 21 in March 1874.

Having read some of the Channel Island boards I have noticed that people have mentioned there being different versions of a surname on the islands - is there anything like this for Brind?

Or can any one help me find George's birth please.

Thanks

Pebs

Hi Pebs

I'm intruiged as to how he got from the surname of Biard to Brind. Unless I'm looking at the wrong person, in the 1871 census the lodger has the surname of Biard.

How did you conclude that was the same person?

there is a "Brint" family in the Channel Islands in 1851
they are on Alderney
then there is
1861
Alderney CI
George brent 16 f.s. Jersey

Wonder if Brind was brint or Brent????

Stewart - I was pointed in the direction of this person by a fellow rootschatter,  it had been transcribed as Bind and when I looked at the image I thought it read Brind - but now looking again I can see Biard but can also still see Brind! It was being a clerk that swayed me to thinking I had the right man.
Back to the drawing board for 1871 as well maybe.

Suz -  ??? Could be - On the various census he never mentions Alderney only Guernsey and Jersey - from memory I think it's even numbers of both places!

Any suggestions?

Thanks for both your help so far anyway

Hi Suz

Thanks for that but having just looked at the Brint family on the 1851 census the father was Stephen and on his marriage certificate George says his father's name is Thomas.

But am wondering if he was a Brint to start with.

If you notice george isn't with the family (father Stephen) in 1851 - George is on his own in 1861 -haven't found a "match" in 1851

Maybe Stephen and family were related -or not!!!!!!!

Not much help really is it???

Am feeling thick here!

I have a George Brint with Stephen and family in 1851 ref: HO107/2531/~F543

But can't find him anywhere in 1861 - can you post that reference please see if we can either tie him to George Brind or not

Thanks
