Name Roney in Westham Sussex
« on: Friday 25 June 10 11:40 BST (UK) »

I'm looking for any information about the name Roney in Westham, Sussex and am hoping to find a baptism for a child William Roney who was born in 1803 and a marriage for his parents, whoever they may have been.

The family I'm researching was comprised of parents William Roney and Ann [unknown], and their chidren that I knew of (up until this week) were believed to be, in age order,  John born abt 1801, Susanna, Thomas, Richard, Sarah, Henry, Edward and Robert born abt 1814.

I just found an entry this week, recording a burial for a William Roney, in Westham, Sussex,  which is not a great distance from Fletching, where William and Ann had moved to.

Hi Penny

I have just checked the SMI for the marriage but cannot find any marriages under the name of Roney at all!

I even tried Rooney but no luck there either.

Checked for the baptism of William on the SFHG baptism database and no luck there.

Hmm

Not managed to find the baptisms for any of the other children either.  Are you sure they name was Roney?

Hi Kerry, thanks very much for your efforts.

I'm sure the surname was Roney - my grandmother used to repeat her maidenname to me in full when I was very young (with a smile - because I always used to laugh at the "Gertude" bit), and other documenttion proves the surname was correct.  I have also seen a reference to Rowney in Sussex in A2A.

In 1851 William Roney's wife Ann, by then widowed, was living at 40 Surrey Street, Brighton, Sussex, next door to her son Robert and his wife and children;

1851 at 40 Surrey Street, Brighton  Sussex
Thomas Roche born by my calcs abt 1818  Ireland Head, 33, Boiler Maker
Ellen Roche abt 1818  Ireland Wife, 33
Mary Roche abt 1837  Ireland Daughter, 11, Day Scholar
Catherine Roche abt 1842  Beckenham, Cheshire* [methinks this is Buckingham, Chesham] , Daughter, 9, Day Scholar
William Roche abt 1844  Beckenham, Cheshire,* Son, age unclear possibly 9
Thomas Roche abt 1846  London, Son, 5
Ellen Roche abt 1850  Brighton, Sussex, Daughter, 8 months
/
 * Annie Roney abt 1781  Hastings, Sussex, Head, Wid, 70, Annuitant
Wm Bould abt 1839  Brighton, Sussex, Grandson  (surname not clearly Bould - looked more like Bomlo or Romlo - could have been the case the writing was very unclear and original enumerator could not read Annie's writing), 12 yrs, Day Scholar - if William and Ann's daughter Sarah had married Edwin Bodle it could be their child.
Registration district: Brighton, Sub-registration district: St Peter,
Source Citation: Class: HO107; Piece: 1645; Folio: 722

Finding the name of William's wife has been a brickwall that I have come up against for the whole time I've been researching the Roney's.

It suddenly occurred to me that maybe either William Roney or his widow Ann might have been related to the Thomas and Ellen Roche found with widow Ann Roney in the 1851.

I'll try and see if I can find any info on the Roche family through ancestry trees.

Thank you again,
Penny

Hi Penny
Coincidentally I'm researching the same family. We may have exchanged info on another forum.
I came across a reference for the birth of William's broher Richard in 1806 to William Roney and Ann listed under the Parish of Selling in Kent. Perhaps your young William was born there too rather than Fletching or Brighton.

Hi Lee

I take it your'e back from your travels.  I wasn't looking for the baptisms of the other children, I'm just trying to find the marriage of their parents William and Ann and the baptism for the William Roney who died very early.

I found the father William's baptism in Eastling, Kent,  and I submitted, a few years ago, more of the children's details up to the website you mentioned above.

I posted another message about the children on the Rootschat Kent board last year, incidentally, but the parish records in Kent that I wanted to check, were not available before 1813.

I remember you had a query about your Phyllis Roney and her fate post 1916.  Have you thought about posting a conversation (as a new topic - in Phyllis's area) on Rootschat?

Hi Penny

Yes, back from travels reluctantly  :(

Thanks for your suggestion about posting something for Phyllis. Have managed to make some headway on her, but need a breakthrough. Have also made some headway on more of the South Australian Roney's and I am waiting on BDMs to get through their backlog to confirm.
