Cardiff, thank you for your reply, have not yet found them in the 1861 but ten years later were living with his father in law, William Williams in Stow Hill in St Woollo's in Newport so presume that is where they were wed.

Hello.

My great-grandfather Josiah (William) Wilkinson, married an Elizabeth Williams.  I don't have a marriage date, but I do have a birth certificate for their son, William Josiah Wilkinson, b. May 17th, 1871 in Newport, Monmouth.  Their home address was 68 Jones Street, Newport.

Don't know if this helps any.  I haven't gone prior to my great grandfather, but do have the progression (and some interesting data) to this point.

zekestone, thank you for your reply with the useful information.
I have been been researching this family for a friend, Lynton Wilkinson who lives in Nuneaton and have got back a little earlier than this, back to Nuneaton in fact!
Would you like me to put him touch with you?

Thank you Ladyhawk for your interest, I already have all the census results except for the 1861 which has proved very elusive. I suspect they were living in Newport at the time probably with the wife's father, William Williams, as the birthplace of the children given in the later census's reveals, they were with him in 1871 also.

PS. I think the details on the sensus for 1881 were not quite correct as father William was born in Coventry!

Hi Al in Vane,

The family do appear to be pretty elusive in 1861  :-\

The 1881 census info. posted was from IGI familysearch, perhaps the birth place of William J WILKINSON has been mis transcribed. If that is the correct family I'm wondering if Josiah (William) WILKINSON & Elizabeth WILLIAMS married in St. Woolas, Newport in 1860 as some of the children were christened St. Woollos, Newport.

Perhaps you may be able to find help with their marriage details from this link, couldn’t see a marriage in Trevethin Parish but did find a christening for  Elizabeth WILLIAMS father William mother Margaret  :-\

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~monfamilies/stwoolosnptprt.htm

IGI extracted christenings Trevethin
parents named William & Margaret

Elizabeth WILLIAMS 13/11/1836
Rachel WILLIAMS 16/6/1822
John 18/11/1825
William 22/1/1826, 20/11/1826 & 16/5/1840
Abraham 25/4/1828 & 21/3/1829
Henry 13/11/1836

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~monfamilies/trevethinprt.htm

Trevethin Parish Records - could see these two children's names
18/11/1825 John Williams s William Williams Margaret Williams Sowhill, miner,
21/03/1829 Abraham Williams, s William Williams Margaret Williams Sowhill, miner

You may already have these details

Could be your Josiah  :-\

Josiah WILKINSON
ch 16/6/1841 Nuneaton
Father William mother Ellen

Robert WILKINSON 24/3/1844
Ellen 17/1/1847
James 13/5/1849
Harriet 5/9/1852

Marriage
13/5/1839 St. Michael, Coventry, Warwick
William WILKINSON single father William
Ellen RHODES widowed

Perhaps zekestone will be able to offer more info.

Good Luck with the search  :)

Yes, William from Nuneaton, I have them there into the late 1700s but was writing from memory. I have all the bottom part of your piece Ladyhawk and will take a close look at the other which is mostly new to me. Williams did live at Stow Hill in Newport which is still extant and you have Sow Hill so probably the same place, also the Wilkinsons mainly worked in the mines as did the Williams's.
Thank you so much for all that information, extremely useful and very much appreciated
