SWEDEN - Carl Ludvig LINDAHL
« on: Saturday 11 September 10 08:33 BST (UK) »
Carl LINDAHL, according to information shown on his second marriage certificate issued in Sydney New South Wales, Australia dated 20th April 1892, he was born in Carlshamn, Sweden in 1861 the son of Andrew LINDAHL and Martha SWANSON and that he was a widower.

There does not appear to be a record of his first marriage in Australia , so the presumption is that he was married elsewhere before he arrived. Nor does there appear to be a record of a death of a Mrs LINDAHL before 1892 which would match his approximate age. So it looks like he arrived in Australia as a widower. There is also no record of him being the father to children other than those of his secind wife Sarah GUTHRIE.

Is it possible he was married in Sweden and that his first wife had died before 1892. And more importantly for us, did he have any children from that first marriage?

Any help would be much appreciated

Thanks

Hi DonL

Carl was Naturalized in Australia in 1901
Said he  was aged 40, born in Carlshamn, had been in Australia 17 years, was a Sailor, and had arrived in NSW on the ship "Yeoman" in 1883

The Yeoman arrived in NSW on 18 Sep 1883 out of London

This appears to be Carl (or how he has been transcribed, anyway!)

Hi DonL

If you can't get help on RootsChat re Sweden, might I suggest the Swedish section of rootschat to help you with emigration details. Karlshamn is a municipality of Blekinge County. The Swedish records are possibly the best in the world. Records are kept of persons moving in & out of and within a parish, county or in this case a country.

Not long ago I furthered my own research in Sweden in just this way, simply by asking emigration details.

Cheers Les

Hi Ambly and Les

Many thanks for that information -  most helpful  -  will investigate further as this seems to be a lead worth following to find then ancestors of my grandfather Albert Clarence Lindale - he had mentioned the name Swanson as the name of his mother and so has Carl Lindahl. My grandfather in his wedding announcement spelt his name as LINDHAL so this is a good lead.

Les I am aware of the great records from Sweden and on my mother's side of the family her grandfather's family have been traced back to the 1600s.

Once again thanks -  I hope this is the breakthrough I have been looking for.

Cheers

Don

In the Australian Mariners records the name has now been changed to Charles LINDELL

As per the original records - slight transcribing error

In 1890, the sailor Karl Ludvig Lindahl, was living in Karlshamn in Sweden together with his mother, the widow Marta Svensdotter (married Johnsson). He was then unmarried.

The mother was born 1826 in Asarum, Sweden.

Hi again DonL,

I've just got access to Swedish Records & I have found a Carl Ludvig, baptised May 18, 1861 in Carlshamn as the son of bryggaren Sven Johnssons wife Marta Svensdtr, aged 34.

Could this be your man?
(Fits the above, but not your initial father's name)

Thanks for that Jan, while it is possible that Carl Ludvig LINDAHL could be my grandfather's father he would have had to work a miracle or two to have a son born in  Australian in 1881 when he arrived in Australia in 1883. However this can't be discounted as we have no proof of the actual birth date of my grandfather, it varies according to which document you view.

I would love to see a record of the marriage of Carl Ludvig LINDAHL, probably in Australia, although of course he could have married before he left Sweden.

I wonder if there were other Lindahls on the ship that Carl travelled on. or perhaps he "fell in love" with a passenger en-route to Australia.

My grandfather's ancestry still remains a mystery to us.

Regards

DonL
