Thank you very much for the prompt reply. Yes, that does seem to be them. She must have remarried after his death. Do you know of any coastguard books for that area that may tell of rescues he may have been involved in.  I must do a visit to the local library.

Thank you once again.

Hi

On another thread you are after information on a WILLIAM Blake, did you mean John, or are there two CGs you're after?

This may be of help in tracing further members of the family.

Using the ADM 175 CG documents I have now traced John Blake's entire CG career. He entered the service on 30 March 1831 having previously served as an 'Extra Man' at Skibbereen, with a first posting to Cornhill (Nomination No.1965 - ADM 175/77). As the name suggests an extra man was employed by the service, but not on the establishment. In most instances these were local men to the station where they were working, which suggests that John lived in the Skibbereen area.

It is easier if I now tabulate his moves:

14 September 1831 to Westbrook
3 January 1834 to Winterton
3 February 1834 to Happisburgh - promoted Commissioned Boatman
11 August 1834 to Maudsley
27 July 1837 to Bradwell
21 June 1844 to Leigh
7 April 1847 to Crouch River - Promoted Chief Boatman
10 October 1851 to Hollywood (Ireland)
5 October 1854 to Thorney (England) - reason 'Ill heath'
15 June 1855 to Pagham
29 February 1856 to Worthing
12 August 1859 to Lancing
30 November 1860 - Discharged on pension.

Thank you so much for all the information you have given me.  I am amazed that you had all that info. Please can you tell me what ADM stands for and would I be able to search these documents myself ? I have a couple more coastguards to search for Donkin, Sunderland &William Richard Morely May, Cornwall.

By the look of things He was born in England & went to Ireland ???

Thank you once again - you have been brilliant.

Best regards

Pleased to be of help.

ADM is the National Archives catalogue classification for ADMiralty documents in their holdings, and yes these can be downloaded for free from the NA website. However, one word of caution, these are extremely large files (in the ADM 175 series), and a good quality broadband connection is essential.

If I can be of any further help please let me know as I have most of these files saved on my computer.

Out of interest was Richard May born in Cornwall in 1808?
