McKirdy, Muddiman, Kerr, McKechnie, Murray
« on: Tuesday 02 November 10 13:58 GMT (UK) »
Hello, trying to find my grandfather's birth and great grandmother's birth and death.

Robert Alexander Mckirdy was born in Scotland about 1881 and died in Ireland in 1924 aged 43.  I can't find any record at all.

His parents were Alexander McKirdy (Largs) and Janet (Jessie) Kerr (Argyle).  Janet was born about 1843 and married in 1860.  Again I can't find any record of her birth or death.

Alex and Janet appear on the 1861 and 1871 census living in Glasgow.  The 1871 Census also shows their niece, Margaret Kerr Taylor, aged 8.

Margaret Kerr Taylor's parents were Janet's sister, Christina Kerr and her husband John Taylor.

No record of them appears in any other scottish census after 1871 but Alex, son Robert and sister-in-law Christina appear on the 1901 and 1911 Irish census.  Both Alex and Christina were widowed according to both census.

Any help would be very much appreciated appreciated.

Hamon,   I think McKirdy's a Bute name, might be worth a look!     Skoosh.

Hi Hamon had a wee look on Scotlands People
Nothing came up searching for Robert Alexander Mckirdy, between 1879 and 1882,
However there is 1 Robert Mckirdy came up in 1881 Born Cardross Dumbarton,
Gro no 494/00 0020, I only had a few credits left at the moment so could not view the entry,
I also have McKirdy's and agree with Skoosh that it seems to be mainly a bute name,

Hi Hamon

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

The 1881 census doesn't help unfortunately. There are three potential Roberts showing but all with different parents:

Robert b. 1880 to Lachlan and Christina in Bonhill, Dumbartonshire
Robert b. 1880 to John and Jane in Rothesay, Buteshire
Robert b. 1881 to Charles and Margaret in Renton, Dumbartonshire

Have you managed to find parents Alexander and Janet (Jessie) in 1881?

Sorry, realise you said you hadn't found them after 1871...  :P

How about this entry in 1881:

Alexr McKirdy 38, brass moulder b. Largs
Jannet McKirdy 37, b. Loch Gilphedd, Argyleshire
Christina Taylor 40, sister in law, laundress b. Loch Gilphedd G, Argyleshire
Robert Kerr 40, son of sister in law (age must be mistranscibed) b. Glasgow

Address: 44 W Bothwell St, Glasgow Anderston

If they married in 1860 and you have them in 1861/71...I'm beginning to think they may not have had children of their own perhaps  ::)

Thank you all so much for your help.

My Alexr McKirdy according to his marriage registrations was born in Largs, Ayr, as was his father, also Alexr.  His mother was Elizabeth Murray from Glasgow and they married in 1841.  Thank you Skoosh and Prophetess, will have a look at Bute.  My geography isn't all that good so will get the map out.  Hopefully will get back to the UK early next year so will take you up on the offer.

Thank you also Monica, I found the Census, it was spot on, obviously was asleep when searched for it.  Also found Robert's birth record, which shows him as illegimate but records his name as Kerr or Taylor.  His name was give as Robert George Alexander.  George may have been the father as Christina was widowed I think in 1864 but it's hard to read the details.  I haven't come across any George in the line so far but yes I had thought he may have been adopted or Alexr & Christina's child ....

Janet and Christina's parents were Robert Kerr and Margaret McKechnie.  As far as I know they were all born in Argyll, on the Lochgilphead 1851 Census as born in Glassary.

I did find a Janet in the 1891 Census who was the right age, she was recorded as a 'Wife' but there was no other family at the address, only a lodger.

Will keep digging, thanks once again to all.

Liz

Hello Sybil and Monica, do either of you have access to the Glasgow telephone directory, I am looking for a Thomas Muddiman.  I think there would be two in Glasgow.  Also, can you both email me.  Thanks Liz

Hello again, hoping someone can help.  I have found an entry on the Family Search site which looks promising.

Unfortunately it doesn't give a christian name, just surname, male, dob and place of birth.  Does the film number given show any more information such as the parish register.  Also, does the film number correspond to those held by Scotlands People and the GROS.  I can't order a certificate until I get more details.

Thanks to all
