Partridge / Hooton marriages
« on: Friday 19 November 10 14:17 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

On FreeReg there is a marriage at Wellingborough Allhallows on 23 Oct 1723 of William Partridge and Elizabeth Hooton, by licence. I accept that the FreeReg transcription is accurate & it would have stated where William was from if it was on the marriage register. I am wondering if the licence had any further information.

On the IGI there is a member submission of this marriage on this same date & adds that William was born about 1698 Wellingborough while Elizabeth was born about 1703 Bozeat.

The IGI has another member submission of a marriage of this same couple at same place, but on 21 March 1722. This states that William was baptised at Podington, Beds on 10 May 1685 & buried 21 May 1726 - but this was not at Poddington. Elizabeth was born about 1687 Wellingborough.

I am interested to know if this is the William from Poddington. I think he is not, as according to the will of William P of Hinwick, Poddington of 1742 he left estate to wife Sarah; and on her will of 1780 she leaves her estate to brother Simon Sayer.

Regards
John

Hi John ...

The Northamptonshire Marriage Index (1700-1837) confirms William and Elizabeth's marriage date as 23 OCT 1723 at Wellingborough.  There is no sign of the 1722 "alternative".

The index records that the couple were both "of Bozeate" (sic), although this may only mean that they were resident there at the time of their marriage, not that they were born there.  The actual parish register entry would give you names of the witnesses, which may give further clues.

Incidentally, whilst searching for the above marriage I came across one between a William PARTRIDGE and Sarah HOOTON in Bozeat in 1829 (just in case it's of interest!).

Hope this is of some help.

thanks for checking Pennie,

As to the other Partridge / Hooton marriage, I have them in my tree ..

see my other topic .... http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,483415.15.html

Sarah was born 1806 & buried aged 38, her parents William Hooton 1774 & Jane Woddin 1779 who married at Bozeat on 3/11/1801

While you have the NMI, could you check for a Mark Partridge marrying a Margaret and/or a Elizabeth around 1674 to 1694. These were baptising children at Podington in that period.

next ... the William Hooton (who married Jane Woddin) was baptised Bozeat on 7 April 1774 son of Jonathan & Frances Hooton. I've a note that Jonathan Hooton married Frances Partridge on 1 Oct 1764 - can this be checked please. By the fact that I've found no other - I suspect this is Frances Partridge who was baptised 1/6/1740 in Bozeat, ye daughter of Paul & Mary Partridge.

I'm unable to check the Mark PARTRIDGE marriage as my copy of the NMI only covers marriages from 1700 onwards.

Initially, I couldn't find HOOTON/PARTRIDGE marriage on the index but after finding it as a submitted entry on the IGI - with the bride's surname spelt PATRIDGE - I rechecked using her name.  The groom's surname has obviously been mistranscribed, but here it is:

01 OCT 1764 - Jonathan WOOTON (otp) to Frances PATRIDGE (otp) at Bozeat CofE

Thanks Pennie,   So it seems this was mistranscribed for the NMI, & should be Hooton, I wonder what the original register shows? .

There are children baptised at Bozeat to Jonathan & Francis Hooton as follows:-
Sarah  7 Apr 1765
Jonathan  27 Aug 1769
William  7 Apr 1774
Frank  7 Apr 1774 - he was buried 14 Aug 1774

I am now wondering if this is the William who married Jane Wooden/Woddin on 3/11/1801. Can this marriage be checked please.  As there is a marriage of William Hooton to Rachel Walker in 1793 as per Pallot's; & as per FreeReg have baptisms at Bozeat of children Jonathan 1793, Sarah 1795 & 1796, Frances 1796 & Hannah 1798 (where the names suggest a family lineage).

The original register shows married by Banns

Pg. 14, No. 70.
Jonathan Hooton.

Although slight errors can be found on the indexes
(possibly with my own work also)
they are a excellent resource for Northants Folk.

The NMI has:

03 NOV 1801 - William HOOTON (otp) to Jane WOODIN (otp) at Bozeat CofE

From my experience, initial "H" and "W" are easily misread - I've found several of my WASTIE ancestors recorded as HASTIE!
