CURGENVEN - anyone heard of this name ?
« on: Wednesday 13 April 05 09:25 BST (UK) »
Hi
Has anyone heard of this surname?
I have just uncovered a gggg grandmother with the name of Elizabeth Curgenven, born 1756, Veryan Cornwall.

I can't find any information about this name so far and wondered if anyone else has seen it.

Does it have a more modern look to it now I wonder?
Mary :-\

Hi Mary,

Not sure about more modern sounding variations, but on www.192.com there are surprisingly a fair few of them around now.

On the 1871 census for instance there are about 40 of them mostly in Cornwall.

Hi Mary,

have you seen this site ??: http://www.ellis.genproxy.co.uk/curgenven.htm

CURGENVEN
The Premise: all Curgenvens and their descendants are related.

The very Cornish sounding name CURGENVEN appears to have been an invention by the Reverend Thomas LEAN (born 1644 in Lelant, Cornwall - died 1712 at Folke, Dorset), Educated at Exeter College, Oxford, in 1680 Married Dorothy PITT (of the family that produced the two William PITTS ). Headmaster of Sherborne school Dorset (1683 - 1695) and then Rector of the nearby Parish of Folke.

Alan Kent, Cornwall Family History Society, member no. 00026 is the acknowledged expert on the Curgenven name.

It was the first entry on a Google-search for curgenven

Clearly Quite a Common Cornish name So many on the IGI for Cornwall

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp

Plenty of mention of the name on Sharon Symons Cornish Ancestors site for Veryan also

http://www.cornish-ancestors.co.uk/Veryan/index.htm

Your Elizabeth is listed onsite ;)

quite a few mentioned in the 1821 census for Veryan so there is a history in the area

All The Best .....Kris  :D

Thanks Kris, Bob and Jonathan   :-*

you given me lots to go on, I will be busy tonight !

It makes a change for me to get an unusual name in my family. I have so many "everyday" names like Mason, Evans, Kelly, Watson etc....

quite nice really   :D

Thanks again,
Mary

Here you will find my connection to the Curgenven's and a link to a Dynamic Family Tree which connects all currently known Curgenven's that I have been able to trace with considerable help.
