SARGENT birth in Saskatchewan please
« on: Thursday 30 December 10 11:44 GMT (UK) »
My great uncle, Sidney Spencer Sargent, emigrated to Saskatchewan in 1911. He returned to England to fight in the Great War and married Lily Elizabeth Dunlop in 1917 in London. She followed him back to Canada at the end of the war, as far as I am aware. In the 1950s and 60s I can remember my mother receiving Christmas cards from Sidney and Lily with Canadian stamps on the envelopes. They had a son, George, born in about 1920. Is there any way I could trace his birth with so little information ?

Many thanks,

Heatha

From passenger lists
Lily arrived 8 Oct 1918 and her stated destination was a farm at Frobshire, Sask which should mean Frobisher, Sask.

Sidney, Lily and George visited England arriving 12 July 1936 at London.  Their destination was W. Hampstead London.  Sidney was a C.N.R. (Canadian National Railway) employee.
Arrivals back into Canada through ancestry or collections canada end at 1935.

Hello Debbie,

Thank you very much. That is a step firmly forward. It probably means that George was born in Frobisher, or close by.

All the best for 2011.

Kind regards,

Heatha     :)

Hi Heatha

Saskatchewan has limited resources online unfortunately.  Due to strict privacy laws, births in Saskatchewan are restricted for 100 years.  They started an online database of BMDs; however, progress has been slow and appears to be at a standstill.

You might try some searches at the following site.  As a non-member, you are limited to a couple of databases.
http://www.saskgenealogy.com/Databases/Databases.htm

Frobisher is a small community in the south-east corner of Saskatchewan and very close to the US border.  You could try a search of an online directory for the surname Sargent at http://www.canada411.ca/  There are a few entries in the general vicinity.

If Sidney worked for the Railway, there is a good possibility that they relocated to different areas of the province or country.

Thank you, Susan. It looks as if I might have to wait until 2020 !

However, the websites are a great help.

I believe (if my mother got it right in her latter years) that Geiorge never married so he would have been the end of the line.

I agree about the movement. I think they ended up in Vancouver. Of course, I'm not sure if that was just George, or all three of them.

I've tried the telephone directories to no avail, sadly.

Thanks again and all the best for 2011.

 Kind regards,

Heatha

Have you checked these websites for possible deaths in BC?
http://search.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/sn-12F583A/gbsearch
http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=collectionDetails&c=fs%3A1538285

I use the 2 of them together to cross reference as the pilot search site gives spouse's or parents' names in most instances.

Many thanks again. Unfortunately, I cannot find any of their deaths there but a real help.

I'm learning about Canadian records all the time and, as several branches of my family ended up in Canada, this is all very useful.

Kind regards,

Heatha

There is a George Sargent buried 1968 in a cemetery in Carnduff, Saskatchewan (about 28 miles away from Frobisher).  It's a possibility I suppose.
