1901 Census for Richard Rose,Southend on Sea
« on: Wednesday 09 March 11 21:17 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone,

I am looking for Richard ROSE born about 1842.  I think he is on his own.

I have a letter from him dated 1925 with the address of c/- W Tickett & Sons, 33 Queens Road, South end on Sea, so assume he must have lived in the area.

The only previous trace I have is on the 1881 Census when he was with his family in 22  Eaton Rise, Ealing, London. The family returned to NZ after 1886, leaving Richard in the UK.

Family 'history' says that he sold the house in Ealing and went to live in South End on Sea.
He has proved to be a somewhat difficult man to find one way and another.

Many thanks,
kiwi

In 1891 Richard is by himself still at 22 Eaton Rise, occupation Commission agent.
The most likely one in 1901 is

Hi Nanny Jan and Crisane,

Thank you both for your prompt help.

Crisane, thank you for finding him still in Eaton rise, Ealing, in the 1891  as a commision agent.  He must have moved after that, at least it narrows it down a bit more.  We thought he never remarried.  His wife (Caroline) returned to NZ with all the children and died in 1896, so a remarriage in 1897 is a possibility, if something of a surprise , to me at least.

Once again family history says his two eldest sons returned to the UK for their education, returning to NZ afterwards, seemed to be a sore point that the same opportunity was not extended to the youngest daughter Amelia, but in those days values were different regarding the education of girls.

Nanny Jan, yes the death in FreeBMD looks a distinct possibility, I wasn't sure where Rochford fitted in but if it is the Southend reg. district I think I will go ahead and order the cert.  If he did remarry it might have the informant as the new Wife.  I'm still trying to find his birth so all clues no matter how small add to the picture.

Many thanks to both of you,

Best  Regards,
kiwi

His new wife might not be the informant; found this on FreeBMD deaths:

Hi Nanny Jan,

Thanks again for the additional info,  I think I will go ahead as it all fits well for Richard and take things as they come.  Still stunned he may have remarried *laugh*.

Best regards,
kiwi.

As Richard says he was born St George's London in a couple of censuses this is very likely his birth on FreeBMD
Sept 1/4 1843 St Geo Han Sq vol 1 page 41

Do you have Richard's marriage cert to Caroline Stace in NZ in 1871? This would give his father's name.
Ignore that birth record for the moment as it isn't matching up with the 1851 census entries. When did Richard go to NZ?
