Hi Keyboard86,

I did have a go with Google :D and it is a separate identity in its own right, a bit further than spitting distance from Southend on Sea, but probably with public transport to and fro in those days, managable for visiting.
My other ancestors seemed to do 5 mile walks to surrounding villages no problem, unlike today when we all hop in the car.
Thanks for your help,
Regards,
kiwi
My Dad used to take us for 20 mile hikes on Sundays just for the fun of it!   For him I think :)

Still no luck with 1851.

Hi Keyboard86,

That is most impressive Keyboard86.  Thank you so much.
My imagination is running wild, maybe Amelia, his widow, was a highly desireable catch and could afford to wait 5 years before remarrying. Maybe she carried on as the hotel keeper in her husbands place.
Here we are based on English Law and until recently a woman could not hold a Hotel licence without being married, at least as I understand it.
Any sign of Richard (jnr) in London in 1861 I wonder, he'd have been about 17/18yr, he wasn't in NZ from what I have gathered.
Regards,
kiwi

20 mile hikes :o
We always went camping in a tent in the summer holidays for weeks on end.  Dad commuted to work sometimes.  Heaps of fun, learnt to swim in the rivers.

I stand to be corrected here but Rochford House might well have been part of Rochford hospital, did it say what relationship the informant was

hello louisa maud
That 1851 census is the only one that looks anywhere near a good possibility at this stage but it still leaves young Richard born 1843 out there somewhere. If he was the Richard Rose who landed in Victoria Oz in Dec 1864 then he should be in England in 1851 and '61.
Of course the marriage cert for Amelia and Henry would give her previous married name if it was 'our' Amelia.
