Not sure why you are asking, but, a Lohr man from Germany was living in Carmarthen on the 1871 Census.    Him and his son move to Pembroke and are there on the 1891 Census.     The father moved back to Carmarthen, but the son stayed in Pembroke and married.

There are quite a few Italian families that settled in Pembroke as well, the earliest one I found are on the 1851 census in Uzmaston, then on later censuses in Pembroke. (Sorry just adding this, Uzmaston is in Pembrokeshire, but the Italian family then settle in Pembroke itself in the next census of 1861 where they are joined by many other Italian families.)

One way to search for Germans or others on these censuses is to just search for the country "Where Born" and leave out all the other  bits.  Not forgetting that the 1841 census is different.

Mothball...thanks for the search  tip. It gets frustrating all these blind alleys so to speak. Think I should also be looking into the German Machinery Salesman angle too.

Hi Researcher,

We had a German Artist-Photographer in Narberth. He appears on the 1871, 1881 and 1891 Census.  He was Frederick Nedahl from Hamburg.

Yes it seems the 'foreigners' from Italy, Germany etc tended to live in East End Pembroke.   Which was at the bottom end of Main Street, the top being where the castle is.

There is still an ongoing interest into why Pembroke was the chosen place to live by these foreign people, as Pembroke does not have that much industry/work.    The bottom end of Main Street was known for it's bawdy reputation, but it's not for me suggest this had anything to do with it.!!

There were many Irish of course as the sea crossing was from nearby Pembroke Dock and quite a few English.
