Samuel Plimsoll
« on: Sunday 20 March 11 12:33 GMT (UK) »
Three Irish sisters left Cork aboard the ship Samuel Plimsoll.
in 1885 to emigrate to Australia.

Their names were Ellen, Bridget and Margaret GAVIN.
Would there be a document recording their previous location in Ireland, which is thought to be
either Roscommon or Cork? I have no other clue to their origin.

I am a descendant of Margaret Gavin who married John Bede Bugden
at Lewisham, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia on 21 February 1886.
Margaret Gavin died at Brighton-le-Sands, Sydney, on 23 June 1947, aged 85 years.

I would appreciate any help you can give me.

Best wishes,

DrGrandpa

Hi DrGrandpa,

Searching NSW Archives it looks like Bridget 20 and Ellen 18 arrived on the Samuel Plimsoll 1880.
Margaret age 20 arrived on the same Ship 3 years later in 1883!
http://srwww.records.nsw.gov.au/indexes/searchform.aspx?id=9

From the actual images;
Margt (as she was indexed) was age 20, a Farm Labourer from Roscommon, Religion Roman Catholic, could Read/Write.
Ship arrived 17 June 1883.

Bridget and Ellen were from Roscommon, Servants, RC and could Read/Write. Notes;
Relations in the Colony;
Brother Patrick living in Wollongong.
Ship arrived 26 August 1880

Trish :)

Hi again,
Sorry I forgot to welcome you to Rootschat :)
Possible Marriages from NSW BMD;

ELLEN Gavin
Emanuel THOMPSON
Reg Molong 1889
5585/1889

BRIDGET E Gavin
Oliver TUITE
Reg Sydney
939/1883

Now if you check NSW BMD for a Bridget Tuite Death 1923 you will get her  Parents Christian names :)
I'll leave that excitement for you!
(a bit confusing as there are 2 in the same year)
Oliver Tuite died 1921.

Cheers,
Trish

First link is Ellen/Bridget and the second Margaret;

http://mariners.records.nsw.gov.au/1880/07/001sam.htm
http://mariners.records.nsw.gov.au/1883/06/067sam.htm

If you are positive Bridget was a Sister then her Death or M/C should have Parents names.
Does Margaret Marriage and Death Certs not have any info?
