Marriage in Carlisle? Shaw/Huntington
« on: Sunday 03 April 11 01:31 BST (UK) »
I am trying to locate the marriage for John Thomas Shaw and Mary Huntington in approximately 1859 - 1861.  In the 1861 they were living in Carlisle and married.  I have found a marriage at Gretna Green for her parents but nothing for them.  Are the records available for Carlisle during this period?  She was born in Curthwaite,  could they have been married in a parish close to Carlisle?

Nothing on FreeBMD for a Shaw-Huntington marriage, 1855-1861.

Gretna is in Scotland, so maybe you need to look up Scotland's People?
(FreeBMD only cover England & Wales)
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

I am now puzzled as to where Mary Huntington fits into the picture?

From where did you find her name?

There are 3 marriages of a John Shaw in Cumberland, 1855-1861.

1. March qtr 1856, Penrith
    Bride: Bowness, Jane

2. June qtr 1856, Whitehaven
   Bride: Either Leeson, Isabella
                  or  Roper, Mary

3. December qtr 1858, Whitehaven (John Christian Shaw)
    Bride: Penrice, Mary
         or Young, Charlotte Emily
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

My great grandfather was William Briggs Shaw and his birth certificate shows his father as John Thomas Shaw and Mary Huntington.  Mary's mother was Isabella Hewitt married to Thomas Huntington.  One of my great Grandfather's brother's name was Joseph Hewitt Shaw and Joseph was Isabella's father.

I have the right family but cannot find any information about their marriage.  Isabella and Thomas were married in Gretna Green but not Mary and John Thomas.  I also do not have a birth date for Mary but she (according to the census) was born in Curthwaite.

The 1861 census shows John T and Mary living in Carlisle as a married couple.  They had a son John T. born in 1860 but he died shortly after birth and in the census there was just the two of them.  They went on to have nine more children and a daughter Isabella died shortly after birth.

What yr roughly from the census was Mary born? as the nearest church to Curthwaite is Thursby and I've found a Mary Hungtington but the parents don't match up ...her christening is 6th July 1809 and the parents are John Huntington and Mary Williamson.

I think this post in the earlier thread (referred to above) answers questions that are presently being asked http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,262609.msg1480834.html#msg1480834
